Myth Vocab: Week 4
1. Cerebral: Having to do with the brain/head. Derived from the
three-headed dog who guarded the gate to Hades.
2. Fury: extreme anger. The Furies were three gruesome creatures
who sprang from the drops of Uranus’ blood when Cronos
mutilated him. The Furies pursued their guilty victims with
snakes, torches, & whips.
3. Odyssey: a long journey. Odysseus, the famous Greek hero, spent
20 yrs. Away from home. The last ten were spent on adventurous
quest to reach his home.
4. Panic: extreme fear. Derived from the goat god, Pan, whose loud
scream made all around him flee in fright.
5. Lethargic: drowsy or sluggish. The river, Lethos, causes those
who drink from it to become weak and forgetful.
6. Janitor: Handyman or doorkeeper. Derived from the Roman god,
Janus, god of portals & doors.
7. Siren: Piercing sound/whistle. The Sirens were mythological
creatures that perched on sea rocks, luring men to their deaths
with their melodious songs.
8. Erotic: Feelings of love or desire. Derived from Eros, the god
of love & son of Aphrodite (his roman name is cupid)
9. Geology: Study of the layers of the earth. Derived from the
earth goddess, Gaea.

Titanic: anything extremely large. The Titans were the
first “Royal Family” of Greek mythology. They included many
famous and powerful gods.
