8-1B Writing Exponential Equations Notes
Lesson Goal:
Given two points or a graph, write the equation of an
exponential function.
Procedure:
a. Label each coordinate with x & y. Plug in each coordinate into
to get two equations. (Hint: It is a little easier to put the point with the larger
"y" value on top)
b. Divide vertically and solve for b.
c. Substitute b back in and solve for a.
d. Check your answer.

d. Check your answer.
Examples: Find the exponential equation passing through the
given points.
1. (2, 24) and (3, 48)
2. (1,90) and (3, 32.4)
(Challenge Problem)
4.
5. Each graph below shows the expected decrease in a car’s value
over the next five years.
a. Write a function to model each car’s depreciation.
b. Determine which car will be worth more after 8 years.
Review Set from Notes 8.1A
6. For each annual rate of change, find the corresponding growth or decay factor.
a. +45%
b. -10%
c. -40%
d. +200%
7. For each function, find the annual percent increase or decrease that the function models.
a. y = 1700(0.75)x
b. y = 984.5(1.73)x
8. Label each problem in #6 as exponential growth or decay.
