Template for thank you letters to Guy Patton. This example assumes a fairly advanced graduate student. Actual letters will have to be tailored to individual students and their stage in the graduate program. But, regardless, it does two things: 1) thanks Guy Patton for travel support to the particular meeting the student attended and describes the paper that was presented and 2) provides some personal information about the student (interests, accomplishment, stage in graduate school, career goals). Month xx, 20xx Mr. Guy Patton OU Foundation Address Dear Mr. Patton: I am writing this letter to express my appreciation for the Robberson Travel Grant that enabled me to attend the 20xx annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, CA. I presented a paper at this meeting titled, “xxxxxxxxxxxx.” The principle findings in my paper are xxxxxxxxxxx. My paper was well received and I was able to get valuable feedback on my research as well as meet other sociologists with similar research interests. I am from Muskogee, OK and currently I am a third year Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology. Previously, I have presented papers at xxxxxxx (list previous meetings if appropriate, note if received travel support from the Graduate College for these meetings). I passed my general exam this past August and have started working on my dissertation. My specialty areas are xxxxxx and xxxxxx and I expect my dissertation will examine xxxxxxx. Previously, I have published papers in xxxxxx (list journals, if any). I anticipate I will graduate in xxxxxxx and go on the job market soon thereafter. I hope to obtain a position as a researcher and teacher at a university. Again, I sincerely appreciate having received a Robberson Travel Grant. Having the opportunity to present my work in a professional forum and to meet others in my field is an extremely important part of my professional development. I couldn’t have had this experience without your support. Sincerely, Joe Student
