Sentence structure
Structure means the way anything is constructed, built or made.
EG: A house is a structure that is made out of wood, bricks, and other materials.
What is a sentence made of?
The most basic parts of a sentence is a word. However, there are two main parts of a sentence;
These two main parts are – the subject and the predicate.
Subject: The subject tells what the sentence is talking about.
The subject of a sentence may be only one word long, or may include a number of words. The
most important word in the subject is the “simple subject”. The other words in the subject are
there to give more information about the simple subject. The subject is one part of a sentence and
the other part which is not the subject is the predicate.
Predicate: The predicate describes something that the subject is or does. The most important
word in the predicate is the “verb”. [A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being]
Examples:
1. My younger sister Ingrid once worked as a costume designer.
Subject
Predicate
2. She enjoys creating things with her hands.
Compound subject: A compound subject is two or more things that work together as the
subject, joint by the word “and” or the word “or”.
Example:
1. Dogs and cats sometimes enjoy living together.
Compound subjects
Compound verb: A compound verb is two or more verbs that describe what the subject does,
joint by the word “and” or the word “or”.
