IT and Network Organization Ecommerce IT and Network Organization OPTIMIZING INTERNAL COLLABORATIONS IN NETWORK ORGANIZATIONS IT and Network Organization Topics • Using Databases to Improve the Distribution of Information • Technology-supported communication • Workflows – Groupwares and Enterprise Collaboration IT and Network Organization Using Databases to Improve the Distribution of Information IT and Network Organization Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems – Also called “Enterprise Systems – Suite of integrated software modules and a common central database – Collects data from many divisions of firm for use in nearly all of firm’s internal business activities – Information entered in one process is immediately available for other processes 5 IT and Network Organization • Data warehouse: – Stores current and historical data from many core operational transaction systems – Consolidates and standardizes information for use across enterprise, but data cannot be altered – Data warehouse system will provide query, analysis, and reporting tools 6 IT and Network Organization • Online analytical processing (OLAP) – Supports multidimensional data analysis • Viewing data using multiple dimensions • Each aspect of information (product, pricing, cost, region, time period) is different dimension – OLAP enables rapid, online answers to ad hoc queries 7 IT and Network Organization • Business Intelligence: – Tools for consolidating, analyzing, and providing access to vast amounts of data to help users make better business decisions – Principle tools include: • Data warehouse • Online analytical processing (OLAP) • Data mining 8 IT and Network Organization Question • Why Business Intelligence is important for the internal collaboration IT and Network Organization Technology-supported communication IT and Network Organization Technology-supported communication • • • • Technology-supported communication may have major organizational impacts. • For example, intranets and groupware force people to cooperate and share information. Their use can lead to significant changes in both organizational culture and the execution of business process reengineering. Further impacts may be felt in corporate structure and the redistribution of organizational power. Cost-benefit justification. The technologies described in this lesson do not come free, and many of the benefits are intangible. However, the price of many networking technologies is decreasing. IT and Network Organization The Network Computing Infrastructure Two major infrastructures of network computing: • Intranet: a network designed to serve the internal informational needs of a company, using Internet concepts and tools. – Browsing and Search capabilities. – Support communication and collaboration. • Extranet: An extranet is an infrastructure that allows secure communications (connects the intranets of different organizations) among business partners over the Internet. – Enables business-to-business (B2B) transactions – Provides an interface to exchange of business forms • Internet Application Categories Chapter 4 12 IT and Network Organization Internet Application Categories Discovery. Discovery involves browsing and information retrieval and provides customers the ability to view information in databases, download it, and/or process it. Communication. The Internet provides fast and inexpensive communication channels that range from message posted on online bulletin boards to complex information exchanges among many organizations. Collaboration. Due to improved communication, electronic collaboration between individuals and/or groups and collaboration between organizations are increasing rapidly. 13 Chapter4 IT and Network Organization Business Value of Technologysupported communication • Better access to reports; • improved productivity, speed and control; • access to engineering documents • HRM information; • internal communication system; • knowledge management IT and Network Organization Question • Why are the three Internet Application Categories? IT and Network Organization Workflows - Groupwares & Enterprise Collaboration IT and Network Organization • Enterprise Collaboration – communicate ideas, share resources, coordinate, collaborate – Groupware – communication and coordination – Workgroup/Team • Formal, structured • Virtual – Telecommuting – Web-based Application pg. 17 IT and Network Organization Modelling workflows • Workflows are modelled so they can be: – Communicated to others (e.g managers, team members). – Exchanged (e.g with other teams doing similar processes) – Integrated (e.g with other computer systems) IT and Network Organization Discussion Forums Data Conferencing Voice Conferencing Groupware Enterprise Collaboration Tools Chat Systems Electronic Meeting Systems Videoconferencing pg. 19 IT and Network Organization Electronic Communications Tools E-Mail Voice Mail Faxing Groupware Electronic Communications Tools Web Publishing Bulletin Board Systems IT and Network Organization 21 IT and Network Organization Virtual Work Environment • Work environments in which the work teams are geographically distributed and sometimes are inter-organizational teams. 22 Chapter4 IT and Network Organization Telecommuting – Web-based Application • Telecommuting, or teleworking, refers to an arrangement whereby employees can work at home, at the customer’s premises, in special work places, or while traveling, usually using a computer linked to their place of employment. • There are numerous non-compensatory benefits and advantages for employees, employers, and society. The most important being improved productivity. • Some disadvantages for the employees are increased feelings of isolation, loss of fringe benefits, no workplace visibility, and lack of socialization. • Disadvantages to employers are difficulties in supervising work, potential data security problems, training costs, and the high cost of equipping and maintaining telecommuters’ homes. IT and Network Organization Question • Why Telecommuting is becoming easier?
