Topic: Geometry Lesson Age: 9th – 10th grade students Time: 62 minutes Lesson Title: Pairs of Angles Standards: CC.9-12.G.CO.1 – Know precise definitions of angle, circle, perpendicular line, parallel line, and line segment, based on the undefined notions of point, line, distance along a line, and distance around a circular arc. Learning Objectives: The learner will be able to define and identify adjacent, vertical, complementary, and supplementary angles. The learner will also be able to find the measures of pairs of angles. Introduction: The teacher will have three problems up on the board for the students to complete at the beginning of class. The warm up problems will consist of review questions from the previous lesson, measuring and constructing angles. They will review angles, vertices, exterior and interior angles look like as well as the different types of angles. This will help the students start thinking about angles to refresh their memories. New Vocabulary: The students will be given these definitions prior to the instruction · Adjacent Angles: Two angles in the same plane with a common vertex and a common side, but no common interior points. · Linear Pair: A pair of adjacent angles whose uncommon sides are opposite rays · Complementary Angles: Two angles whose measures have a some of 90º · Supplementary Angles: Two angles whose measures have a some of 180º · Vertical Angles: Two nonadjacent angles formed by two intersection lines Instructional Period: (The students will take notes in their notebooks) · Teacher will discuss the definition of adjacent angles o Adjacent Angles: Two angles in the same plane with a common vertex and a common side, but no common interior points. o Students will be shown the diagram below to help them understand what adjacent angles look like and be asked to draw a few examples. · Teacher will discuss the definition of a linear pair of angles o Linear Pair: A pair of adjacent angles whose uncommon sides are opposite rays o Students will be shown the following diagrams to help them understand what a linear pair of angles look like and will be asked to draw a few examples. · Teacher will discuss the definition of complementary and supplementary angles o Complementary Angles: Two angles whose measures have a some of 90º o Supplementary Angles: Two angles whose measures have a some of 180º o The following images are examples of both complementary and supplementary angles o Students will be asked to draw a few examples of both complementary and supplementary angles o The teacher will then talk to the students about finding the measures of complements and supplements to specific angles. The following examples will be given to the students to work through in their notebooks. · Teacher will discuss the definition of vertical angles o Vertical Angles: Two nonadjacent angles formed by two intersection lines o Students will be shown the following diagrams to help them understand what vertical angles look like and will be asked to draw a few examples. Check for Understanding: · The teacher will ask 5 random students to come up to the board and draw an example one of the five angles that have been learned. Once drawn, they will provide a quick summary of what type of angle/angles the drawing represents. Guided Practice: · The students will work in partners to complete problems 3-6, 7, 8, and 13. The teacher will walk around helping students complete the 7 problems. Independent Practice: · The students will complete numbers 14, 16, 18, 19, 23, 24, 27, 28, 30, 31, 35, and 36 from the packet that is given to them after the instruction. This will test their knowledge learned from the lesson. Each problem asks something different so it will help the teacher see where students did not understand certain problems. Closing Activity: · Exit Slip: The students will take out a half sheet of paper and answer the following questions o What was one thing you learned today? o Are there any questions you still have? o Is there anything the teacher could have done differently to enhance the lesson?
