UNIVERSITY OF DERBY JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE Senior Lecturer in Computer Science DEPARTMENT / COLLEGE Electronics, Computing and Mathematics, College of Engineering and Technology LOCATION Kedleston Road JOB NUMBER 0215 -16 REPORTS TO Deputy Head of Department, Head of Computing SALARY £39,324 - £46,924 per annum Role Summary The Department of Electronics, Computing and Mathematics at the University of Derby has expertise in the areas of data science, software engineering, application development, computer games programming and intelligent systems. We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Senior Lecturer with either an established industrial or academic profile, in an area related to one or more of the areas above. You will work closely with the department's academic community to lead and deliver our highly successful undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, with responsibility for contributing towards our employability agenda in the department. A PhD in a related discipline is essential. As the successful post holder, you will be required to significantly enhance the department’s teaching provision and to help deliver a research inspired curriculum. You will be expected to contribute across one or more of the following themes: Teaching of programming at all levels (especially C/C++, Java, C#, Python) Teaching of applied artificial intelligence Videogame development using industry standard AI and/or Physics engines. Software Engineering Additionally the post holder will make an appropriate contribution to the management of the department’s programmes. In particular the post holder will participate in activities carried out by the department’s research clusters. The post holder will also be expected to establish and grow their personal research output and esteem to achieve a submission to the next REF. 1 Principal Accountabilities Teach an appropriate number of UG and/or PG courses. Take relevant module and programme leadership responsibilities that will include marketing, recruitment, delivery and on-going development for those programmes. Contribute to the department’s ambition to increase research output by publishing in appropriate esteemed journals and conferences. Contribute to the development of the department’s research esteem by organising scholarly activities such as edited books and workshops/conferences. Supervise UG and PG research students. Liaise with departmental researchers as required, on existing and future initiatives regarding setting up projects with the industry primarily through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. Participate in programme and subject developments and contribute to ongoing quality assurance, review and re-validation processes for the department’s programmes. Contribute to new initiatives as appropriate at programme, departmental, cross-college and university level. Engage in continuing professional development in teaching, practice-based research and/or scholarly activity. Take on other responsibilities as required by the Deputy Head of Department or the Head of Department. Person Specification 1. Essential Criteria • Qualifications Doctoral degree in relevant subject area First Degree or Masters in relevant subject Commitment to and understanding of research and scholarship Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or willingness to undertake application process • Experience Subject expertise in one or more of the following: computer programming (C/C++, Java, C#, Python), software engineering, videogame development( eg. Physics engines and tools), Artificial Intelligence Knowledge and expertise in at least one other subject area (e.g. databases, computational physics, operating systems, simulation, graphics, etc.) 2 Evidence of competence in the design and development of software applications Experience of teaching at HE level Evidence of an emerging research profile in computer science, artificial intelligence, software engineering Evidence of the management and leadership of curriculum within Higher Education, or significant industrial projects • Skills, knowledge and abilities Excellent organisational skills Ability to work both individually and as part of a team Ability to manage projects and people • Personal qualities, values and behaviours Effective team player with the ability to build effective relationships and interact with students, external clients and fellow professionals An effective communicator with enthusiasm and a positive attitude 2. This will normally be interpreted as having at least two years teaching experience in further or higher education. The expectation will be that you will be (or will become) a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or have gained (or is working towards) an award from the HEA accredited course or some other recognised teaching award acceptable to the University. You will be expected to commence this programme within your first year of appointment and successfully complete within 18 months of starting the programme.
