Toward a Sustainable 21st Century
“…an initiative of a foundation of global reach and research university to do together more than they can do
separately on significant unsolved problems of global society…”
The “Toward a Sustainable 21st Century” series is an initiative of a foundation of global reach
and a research university to do together more than they can do separately on significant unsolved
problems of global society in the areas of marine resources conservation, and threats to ecosystem and
environmental health caused by toxic chemicals and the absence of effective governance structures which
promote sustainability. There is a special focus on the contributions of organized civil society, nongovernmental organizations, and international governmental organizations to promoting sustainability in
the 21st Century. The broad goal is to contribute to sustainability on Earth through five general categories
of presentations:
 Science and 21st Century Sustainability
 Law and 21st Century Sustainability
 Governance and 21st Century Sustainability
 Civil Society and Non-Governmental Initiatives for 21st Century Sustainability
 Special Topics in Sustainability
There have been seven programs in the series so far with upcoming programs on Enhancing the
Future of the California Coast (March 4, 2011), Snowmelt and Glacier Melt and the Implications for Human
Security and Ecosystem Sustainability (October 21, 2011). There will be conferences on Pesticides in the
Spring of 2012 and on Toxics in the Oceans with a case study of the Gulf Oil Spill in the Fall of 2012. The
conference series occurs at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences
and Engineering in Irvine, California.
Within UCI, the “Toward a Sustainable 21st Century” series is co-sponsored by the School of
Social Ecology, the School of Law, the Program in Public Health, and the Newkirk Center for Science
and Society. The web version is a product of the collaboration of Jennifer Lane and Eric Carter from
Computer Support, and Patricia DeVoe from the Office of the Dean of Social Ecology. Harry Ratner is
Producer/Director of the digital recording and the editing has been completed by Mr. Ratner and William
Alvarez from the Teaching Learning and Technology Center.
The planning for the individual programs has benefitted significantly from the contributions of
Sue Trumbore, Ellen Druffel, Joseph F.C. DiMento, Alejandro Camacho, Frank L. Meyskens, Jr., Guiyun
Yan, Anthony James, Norma Yokota, Dele Ogunseitan, Rufus Edwards, J. Peterson Myers, Karen
O’Brien, Donald Blake, Richard Matthew, Wendell Brase, Michael Robinson-Dorn, Erwin Chemerinsky,
Helen Ingram, Dan Stokols, David Feldman, Sergio Knaebel, Lisa Grant Ludwig, Eric Rignot, Isabella
Velicogna, Bryan MacDonald, and Cindy Chen.
The “Toward a Sustainable 21st Century” series is presented to the campus and community by
the Newkirk Center for Science and Society under the leadership of Joseph F.C. DiMento.
The “Toward a Sustainable 21st Century” series is administered for the foundation of global
reach and UCI by John M. Whiteley and Norma Yokota with the assistance of Nina Obiedo from the
Social Ecology Business Office, Chris Rigney from Contracts and Grants, and Lynn Rahn from the UCI
Foundation.
