OVERVIEWandLEARNINGOUTCOMESoftheSTATISTICSMAJOR
Statisticianshelpdesigndatacollectionplans,analyzedataappropriatelyandinterpretanddrawconclusionsfromthoseanalyses.Thecentral
objectiveoftheundergraduatemajorinStatisticsistoequipstudentswithrequisitequantitativeandlogicalskillsandexperiencethattheycan
employandbuildoninflexibleways.Majorsareexpectedtomasterconceptsandtoolsforworkingwithdataandtohaveexperienceanalyzing
realdatathatgoesbeyondthecontentofaservicecourseinstatisticalmethodsfornon-majors.Majorsshouldunderstandthefundamentalsof
probabilitytheory,statisticalreasoningandinferentialmethods,statisticalcomputing,statisticalmodelinganditslimitations,andhaveskill
describing,exploringandinterpretingdatabygraphicalandothermeans.Graduatesarealsoexpectedtolearntocommunicateeffectively.

Statistics133:ConceptsinComputingwithData(3units).Thiscoursefocusesonstatisticalcomputingfordataanalysis,includinghowtoacquire,cleanandorganizedata,
analyzedatausingcomputationallyintensivestatisticalmethods,andreportfindings.Studentsgainexperienceincomputingasasupportingskillforstatisticalpracticeand
research.Theylearnhowtouseexistinghigh-levelgeneralpurposesoftware,toimplementalgorithmsfromscratch,toexpressstatisticalideasandcomputations,andthey

Statistics134:ConceptsofProbability(3units).Prerequisites:Oneyearofcalculus.Thisisanintroductiontoprobabilitytheory,aimedatstudentswhohavehadatleastone
yearofcalculus.Thecoursecoversthelawsofprobability,expectation,conditioning,covarianceandcorrelation,aswellasallthestandarddistributionsofdiscreteand
continuousrandomvariables.Functionsofrandomvariables-sums,orderstatistics,andsoon-arestudiedthoroughly,asarelimitlawssuchasthelawoflargenumbersand
thecentrallimittheorem,andthestandardmodels:Bernoullitrials,samplingwithandwithoutreplacement,Poissonprocess,univariateandbivariatenormal.Thecourseserves
