FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE POINT LOMA PLAYHOUSE ANNOUNCES 2016 SEASON Features four productions, including Annie Baker's Circle Mirror Transformation, a world premiere of Matt Thompson's The Complete History of Theatre (abridged), John Cariani's Almost, Maine, and a holiday production of The Eight: Reindeer Monologues San Diego, Calif. (February 5, 2016)—Point Loma Playhouse Artistic Director Matthew Thompson recently announced the company's 2016 season. Featuring four productions, the season opens with Circle Mirror Transformation by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker and includes a world premiere production of Matt Thompson's The Complete History of Theatre (abridged) along with John Cariani's Almost, Maine, and a holiday production of The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. “The first full season at the new Point Loma Playhouse is sure to make our audiences think, laugh and swoon with affection.” – Matt Thompson George Ye directs the season opening Circle Mirror Transformation in February/March. An “absorbing, unblinking and sharply funny” (The New York Times) play that won the 2010 Obie Award for Best New American Play. Set in the fictional college town of Shirley, Vermont, Circle Mirror Transformation tells the story of an unlikely collection of strangers who sign up for Marty's "Adult Creative Drama" class: a recently divorced carpenter, a high school junior, a former actress, and Marty's husband. Unfolding like a charmingly funny indie film, the group plays Marty's imaginative, and sometimes awkward, theatre games. But as their relationships develop over the course of the summer, the seemingly silly games generate some real-life drama. This delightful comedy from playwright Annie Baker landed on Top Ten lists of The New York Times and The New Yorker for 2010. The world premiere of Point Loma Playhouse Playwright in Resident and Artistic Director Matt Thompson's The Complete History of Theatre (abridged) follows in June. Directed by AJ Knox, theatrical greats William Shakespeare, Sarah Bernhardt and Constantine Stanislavsky take us on a wild and wacky journey through the history of theatre from Aristophanes to Emile Zola. You'll hear some of the most famous lines from the world's best-known and beloved plays performed at breakneck speed during a rollicking 90-minute ride. Thompson will direct John Cariani's charming mega-hit Almost, Maine in October. On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend--almost—in this delightful midwinter night's dream. For the holiday season, Point Loma Playhouse will produce The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. Scandal erupts at the North Pole when one of Santa's eight tiny reindeer accuses him of sexual harassment. As mass media descends upon the event, the other members of the sleigh team demand to share their perspectives, and a horrific tale of corruption and perversion emerges, which seems to implicate everyone from the littlest elf to the tainted Saint himself. With each deer's confession, the truth behind the shocking allegations becomes clearer and clearer. ...and murkier and murkier. Throughout the season, Point Loma Playhouse will produce its Reading Series, including renowned local actor and playwright Tim West's Ray's Last Case in February, Thompson's hit show Ted Williams: A Tip of the Cap in April, and Artistic Associate Hilary White's historical dramedy, Houdini's on First in June. There will also be a special presentation of Point Loma Playhouse's founder David Sein's screenplay Going Uber in October.
