4 Figure Grid References
To find a reference for a square on the map we use a 4 Figure Grid Reference to find the
reference we read the grid (line) numbers across and then up from the bottom left hand
corner of the square we are looking at.
In the example on the left to identify
where the village of Bishop’s Tachbrook is
on the map we have to:
Go along the corridor (eastings) = 31
Go up the stairs (northings) = 61
Therefore the 4 figure grid reference is:
31 61
This is a square 1km by 1km on this map!
Identify the 4 Figure grid for each of the letters.
