Note: Overtime the meaning has gone beyond that of just being restricted to animals. For
example in America they play tetherball (where a ball is tied to rope or string).

Meaning: involving or requiring strenuous effort; difficult and tiring

Example: The mayor unveiled a statue to the amazed crowd.
