Also remember that you are responsible for dropping or withdrawing from the class. If you do not do so, your current point total will be used to determine your final grade. Any student not actively participating in the academic content of the course (meaning completing at least one of the tasks listed under “Assignments” in Module 01) by Monday June 20 will be dropped as a "NO SHOW". Just logging into Canvas is not enough. Also, if at any point you stop participating in the class for an entire week or more, you may be dropped from the course. Last day to drop with a refund: Last day to drop without a "W": Last day to drop with a "W": June 16 June 21 July 22 Deadlines: To receive full credit for an assignment, it must be submitted by the published deadline unless I have specifically given permission to submit it later. Canvas/computer/internet problems are not valid excuses. However, any missed deadlines due to documented medical appointments will be excused. Unless otherwise stated, you may still turn in assignments up to 3 days late, but you will be penalized 10% of the available points for every 24 hours it is not turned in, up to a maximum of a 30% penalty. Late quizzes/exams may be permitted, but will incur the same penalty restrictions. If you ever have a scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can try to work out alternative options. Pay close attention to the “Available” dates for individual assignments for more specific information. Course Student Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the fundamental chemical principles and reactions involved in biochemical processes and explain the structure, function, and regulation of metabolic pathways. 2. Read, evaluate, cite, and explain biochemistry-related developments published in peer-reviewed journals. 3. Apply knowledge of bioenergetics and metabolic pathways to solve biological problems. Graded Course Components Homework: Homework assignments will be given each week. Homework will typically consist of open-ended questions and problems. All homework assignments are untimed and will be submitted through the Canvas interface. Proctorio will not be engaged for homework assignments meaning use of notes and/or textbook materials is allowed. Quizzes: Quizzes covering lecture material will be completed each week. They will be timed, online quizzes taken through the Canvas website utilizing Proctorio remote proctoring service software. Each quiz will consist of 10 multiple choice questions and must be completed by the published deadline to receive full credit. Exams: There will be two mid-term exams and a final exam. Exam questions may be a combination of multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blank, essay, and/or matching. They will be timed, online exams taken through the Canvas website utilizing Proctorio remote proctoring service software. Unless previous arrangements are made, students must take the exam within the assigned time period. Discussion Forums: Almost every week, you will be required to participate in an online discussion forum in which you will have an opportunity to ask questions or request clarification for any material that was reviewed that week. Not only will you post your question, but you will have to respond to other posts in order to receive full credit. Journal Club Presentation: Each student will be asked to create an oral presentation on a geneticsbased journal research article of your choosing. The presentation will be recorded and uploaded as a video to Canvas for assessment. Disease Report: You will choose a biochemistry-related human disease and write a report in which you give background on the disease, while highlighting the biochemical pathways that are involved. Participation: Participation will mostly be assessed by actively participating on the discussion boards and submitting assignments by the published due dates. However, attendance during office hours and/or responding to Canvas Inbox messages and assignment comments in a timely manner may be assessed as well.
