Candidates are expected to make reasonable assumptions where necessary and
ensure these are clearly stated.
You need to explain your working fully as credit is given for method as well as for
numerical accuracy. Where a distribution of marks within a question is shown,
this should not be taken to be definitive but is for guidance only.
A document containing the Chemical Engineering Steam Tables and a High
Temperature Psychrometric Chart will be provided. Use these if required.

Attempt ALL questions.
1.
An evaporator is to produce 35 % solids concentrated orange juice. The juice is
fed at a temperature of 20 ºC, a rate of 20000 kg hr-1 and a concentration of 11 %
solids. The single effect is operated at a pressure of 0.3 bar absolute.
Steam is supplied at a pressure of 1.5 bar gauge and costs £0.037 per kg.
Evaporator effects are available at a cost of £50,000 each.
(a)
Draw a single effect evaporator labelling all streams clearly.
(2 marks)
(b)
Draw a double effect forward fed evaporator labelling all streams clearly.
(3 marks)
(c)
If the evaporator is to run for 8000 hours per year for 20 years, should
a double effect, forward fed evaporator replace the single effect?
(Hint: You will need to calculate the steam required for both evaporator
arrangements which will involve both mass and heat balances.)

Pressure in the first effect will be the same as for the single effect evaporator.
The pressure in the second effect is 0.07 bar absolute. The single effect and
double effect evaporator are to produce identical final concentrate streams. The
overall heat transfer coefficient for the second effect, U2 is 3000 W m-2 K-1 and
the heat exchanger area for this effect A2 = 50 m2. The specific heat of the juice
can be assumed to be 3.98 kJ kg-1 K-1, neglect any boiling point rise or heats of
solution.
Show all working. Excel spreadsheets, Mathcad sheets or similar will not be
marked. Properties of steam if required must be obtained from the steam tables
provided (note the online calculator ones some students used last year were
incorrect).

6500 kg hr-1 wet solid with 10 wt% moisture (dry basis) is dried using a two-stage
dryer as shown in the diagram below. The moisture content of the interim dried
solid (S2) is 5 wt % (dry basis). Hot air (G1) with a temperature of 355 K and
humidity 0.01 kg kg-1 enters the first dryer. The humid air leaving the first dryer
(G2) is heated to a temperature of 335 K (G3) with no change in humidity.
Both dryers operate adiabatically where the solid is at its respective wet-bulb
temperatures with the air.
The whole system is maintained at constant
atmospheric pressure. Assume NTU = 1.5, and no heat of mixing or heat loss.

Calculate the temperature (in °C) of the gas stream (G2) leaving the first
dryer.

(b)
Determine the dry gas flowrate (in kg hr-1).
(10 marks)
(c)
Calculate the flowrate (in kg hr-1) of the humid air (G2) leaving the first dryer.
(6 marks)
(d)
Calculate the moisture content (dry basis) in the final dried solid (S3).

(e)
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of continuous co-current and
counter-current rotary dryers.

For settling of a single particle, determine the terminal settling velocity
starting from a force balance assuming the particle is a rigid sphere and
moving under Stoke’s regime.
Provide assumption(s) and diagram as
necessary.

(b)
A sphere of density 3,300 kg m-3 falls freely under gravity in a fluid of density
980 kg m-3 and viscosity 0.66 x 10-3 Pa.s. Given that the terminal velocity
of the sphere is 0.18 m s-1, calculate the particle’s diameter in mm.

(c)
What would be the length of the edge of a cube (in mm) of the same material
falling in the same fluid at the same terminal velocity?
(Hint: Standard drag curve is needed – see Figure 1 attached to this paper.)

(d)
Describe why the arrangement of particles in a packed bed is highly
important in describing the characteristics and behaviour of the system.
