Ch. 11 Tissues
Tissues are groups of similar cells that perform a common function. There are
four categories of tissues in the body. Read Ch. 11 in your textbook.
1) Epithelial tissue
2) Connective tissue
2) Muscle tissue
3) Nervous tissue
Create a table using these categories to help organize your material. Construct
the table on a large blank sheet of paper provided by your teacher. (17 x 22)

Drawings
Features - high cellularity, special sensory receptors, forms a barrier, avascular, innervated
Surfaces - basal (hemidesmosomes, basement membrane), apical (lumen, microvilli, cilia,
stereocilia), lateral (adhering junctions, tight junctions, desmosomes, gap junctions)
Types - squamous, cuboidal, columnar, simple, stratified, pseudostratified, specialized
Connective Tissue
Structure - cells (structural, immunological, defense, energy reservoirs), extracellular matrix
(ground substance, protein fibers)
Types of fibers - collagen, reticular, elastic
Classification - proper (dense, loose), embryonic (mesenchyme, mucous), specialized
(cartilage, adipose, bone, blood)
