Several ways have been proposed to improve the cariostatic effect of fluoride at low pH. The
demineralization-inhibiting effect of fluoride-releasing bonding materials during orthodontic treatment
was minimal. Derks A, Katsaros C, Frencken JE, van ’t Hof MA, KuipersJagtman AM. Caries-inhibiting
effect of preventive measure during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. Caries Res.
2004;38:413–420. As a result, fluoride in combination with antimicrobials has been recommended to
have an additive effect in the prevention of white spot lesions.
MDPB:
12-methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide is an antibacterial monomer. It has a strong bactericidal
activity against the oral bacteria specifically S.mutans which is the main bacteria causing carious lesions.
MDPB-containing primers have been shown to kill S. mutans in a short period of time after contact and
it also prevents the growth of bacteria on its surface.
