Natural Selection: PhET Interactive Solutions
Part 1
Go to phet.colorado.edu
Click on SIMULATIONS and choose BIOLOGY from the drop-down menu.
Choose NATURAL SELECTION, click PLAY, AND choose INTRO.
Set the environment to winter and add a mate.
***Watch for 6 generations. Describe the result.
***Predict what will happen if a dominant allele for brown fur is introduced. Will there be a different
outcome if the allele for brown fur is recessive?
Start over and test your hypothesis. Choose winter, Add a dominant allele for brown fur.
Add a mate.
***Watch for 6 generations. Describe the result.
***Change the allele for brown fur to recessive and repeat the process for 6 generations. Describe
the result.
***Was there a difference in the outcome when comparing the dominant allele to the recessive
allele?
***Predict what will happen if there is a change in the environment: Predators move into the
environment!
Start over and test your hypothesis. Choose winter, Add a dominant allele for brown fur.
Add a mate.
In generation 2, add predators.
***Watch until the end of generation 4. Press pause and describe the result of adding predators.
***Continue watching until bunnies take over the world. How long did it take?
***Change the allele for brown fur to recessive and repeat the process for 4 generations. Describe
the result.
***Continue watching until bunnies take over the world. How long did it take?
***Was there a difference in the outcome when comparing the dominant allele to the recessive
allele?

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and choose LAB.

Predict what might have happened if you had chosen summer instead of winter. Test your
hypothesis and describe the results in a paragraph. Be sure to describe HOW you tested your
hypothesis. Compare the results to the findings when we tested winter.

***Summarize the activity using ALL of the following terms: genetic variation, reproductive
success, selective advantage, natural selection, over production, and allele frequency.

Part 2
Click PROPORTIONS.
Choose a season: ____________________________
Choose an allele for brown fur: ______________________________
Choose an allele for ears: ______________________________
Choose an allele for teeth: ______________________________
Add a mate.
In generation 2, add predators. Watch until the end of generation 6. After each generation, record
the proportions for each trait.
Describe the final result.

Predict what might have happened if you had chosen the other season but kept all other alleles the
same. Test your hypothesis and describe the results in a paragraph. Be sure to describe HOW you
tested your hypothesis. Compare the results to the findings when we tested the other season.

***Summarize this round of the activity using ALL of the following terms: genetic variation,
reproductive success, selective advantage, natural selection, over production, and allele frequency.

Part 3
Repeat the steps for the activity above but choose LIMITED FOOD instead (no predators).
Click PROPORTIONS.
Choose a season: ____________________________
Choose an allele for brown fur: ______________________________
Choose an allele for ears: ______________________________
Choose an allele for teeth: ______________________________
Add a mate.
In generation 2, add LIMITED FOOD. Watch until the end of generation 6.
Describe the final result.

Repeat the steps for the activity above but choose TOUGH FOOD instead.
Click PROPORTIONS.
Choose a season: ____________________________
Choose an allele for brown fur: ______________________________
Choose an allele for ears: ______________________________
Choose an allele for teeth: ______________________________
Add a mate.
In generation 2, add TOUGH FOOD. Watch until the end of generation 6.
Describe the final result.
