Introduction
Real world connections help to promote student achievement
through learning. Without a connection, learning cannot occur
since it does not meet the interest of the students. Making real
world connections is important to develop the student’s skills.
It helps the students to have a better delivery and
development while writing; a student needs to be able to
connect with a topic in order to be able to learn. There are
many situations where the student can connect with what they
are trying to write about.

How to engage
students into Writing:
✎
✎
✎
✎
✎
Allowing the students to take control over what they
want to write about .
Connect the topic to their world.
Share your writing journey.
Integrate writing into larger projects.
Make it fun.

The
Schema
Theory
It explains how learning starts when the learner tries to integrate a new type of
knowledge into their prior knowledge:
● Organizes the knowledge into the long-term memory by putting the information
in different categories.
● Each category contains related information.
● When the knowledge gets divided into the category, there is an expectation for
the future knowledge the learner will have.
● The expectations that are set up for each category will help the learner to relate
the future knowledge into the category that satisfies all the expectations.
● Within this framework there would be clusters of related knowledge,
experiences, feelings, and ideas that will help the learner’s interpretations,
expectations, and attention as ideas are understood.
● Without the schemata to help comprehension, the learner could easily interpret
ideas out of context or put the new information into the wrong place .
Activate knowledge in the
students’ minds.
Group Discussions
To relate the new concepts
with the prior knowledge
they had. This way the
students can make
connections.
Anticipation Guides
Ask students to think, write,
and/or talk about their opinions
on key themes or big
ideas contained in upcoming
texts and units of study.
Multimedia
Before starting a new unit or
text. Show students a
related video or slideshow.

Writing
Anxiety
✒
✒
✒
✒
Most people become anxious when they have difficulty
or a negative experience while writing.
When the writer has lack of interest in the topic, it is
harder to concentrate or have a good development.
If the writer does not connect with the topic, then it
would be difficult to succeed in the writing process.
Writers often put pressure on themselves because
writing is a form of showing and sharing their own
knowledge.
Different ways to connect with
the students.
Students’
Interest
Students’
Experiences
Significant
Issues
By asking student to create a
presentation to share their
knowledge about a topic they
care about.
Students bring their unique
experiences and perspectives into
a project.
There is a variety of topics in the world
that can affect the students these
topics could include racism, poverty,
and social media.

Brainstorming:
 Allows the students to think freely .
 Encourages the efficiency for solving problems and
have more creative ideas.
 Helps to encourage students to focus on a topic by
developing connections they previously had.
 Helps the student to come out with ideas or words
related to that specific topic .

Social
Stress
Results from the person’s social environment .
Students often are placed in stressful situations due to the expectations
to always perform better than another student.
Students do not feel comfortable sharing their ideas or opinions with
others because they are scared of failure.
It is important to implement informal brainstorming that way the student
can express themselves.
Making connections between students is also very important as they
are sharing a space and a common goal.
Making connections between students helps to develop a positive
environment that will drive instruction.
Prewriting

Freewriting
Clustering
Consist of writing freely whatever
comes to mind any sentences,
phrases, or words, without
worrying about the grammar or
the punctuation.
Used to make relationships between our
ideas, to cluster ideas the topic is
written at the center of the paper, then
proceed to draw a circle around it, and
then add more ideas separated in their
own circle and connecting them with
lines.

Writing Skills
♦ Allows the students to communicate their message with clarity.
♦ Helps students to reach to a larger number of readers.
♦ Writing is a skill that can always be learned and improved.
♦ Checking for grammar errors:
 Identify misspelled words.
 Finding punctuation errors.
 Run-on Sentence or Comma Splice.
♦ Best way for checking a text is to read it aloud.

Grammar
Helps the reader’s
comprehension
Important to provide
the correct
information
Is the structure
that conveys
precise meaning
Conclusion
Using real-world connections to improve writing is imperative since writing is
one of the most important skills any student can learn. Making connections
while writing makes the process easier for the student. This will also help the
student to have a better understanding of what they are writing about. By giving
some advantages or freedom to the students we can improve their writing skills.
This is because they would have a better connection with what they are going
to write about. A good way to understand it is with the schema theory. This
theory helps to comprehend more how the prior knowledge gets stored in the
brain and how the future knowledge would get stored.
There are many ways to connect with the students through their interest,
experiences and issues. These connections result in better prewriting that
includes brainstorming, freewriting, and clustering. By practicing prewriting we
can avoid writing anxiety caused when they have a difficult or negative
experience while writing.
