Basic Problem
Developed Complaint
My reservation After waiting for a full twenty minutes in a long queue, as only a single reception desk was
was lost.
open despite an entire bus load of people arriving, I was rudely told by the receptionist
that my reservation was missing. After a long conversation and many details given, I was
finally given a key to my room. As my exhausted family finally stumbled into the room,
ready to relax after our long journey, I was horrified to see the state of the room: to call it
‘messy’ would be a compliment! My teenage son’s room is far tidier. Honestly, it looked
like a pig sty!
The view was
atrocious.
Despite the horrendous state of the room, the biggest shock awaited me when I threw
back the curtains. I had specifically paid extra for a sea-view after being impressed by the
glossy photos of the swaying palm trees and golden sands on your website. Instead, my
view was of the main street full of noisy traffic (that later kept me awake at night). After
ringing reception, I was told that there wasn’t any sea-view rooms left as the room had
been double-booked. The only sympathy offered was a heavy sign, as if I was being
difficult and the (empty) promise that they would “look into it”. They didn’t.
The swimming
pool was filthy.
Hoping to improve my mood by abandoning the despicable hotel-room, my family and I
headed down to the swimming pool to relax. Not a single toe was submerged in that
cesspool. It was so unhygienic, I dare not even let me children sit next to it for fear of
catching the plague! I had hoped for a luxury hotel, but instead felt as if I’d booked to stay
in a chemical-waste facility!

Did you know that 40% of people who get cosmetic surgery end up regretting
it and 10% of that group actually wish they could reverse it?
Despite the stereotype that all children hate homework, in a recent survey,
35% of pupils said they felt homework was vital to their success at school.
You might want to consider taking up boxing. My brother, who tried sparring a
few years ago, told me: “Even with the head gear, getting hurt is inevitable.
Despite the training and the protective gear, it’s pain is a big part of the sport.”
The good things about mobile phones is that they allow you to stay connected to
your friends and family. Even better, mobile phones contain many useful apps
that can make your life easier. Best of all, mobile phones give you access to
Google, so you have an ocean of information at your fingertips.

Embedded Clause
Getting a tattoo is disastrous: It
will ruin your perfect skin.
As ugly as graffiti, a tattoo will
permanently stain your body
like a vandal who scrawls up a
wall.
A tattoo, despite looking good
when you’re young, will
eventually stretch and fade until
it looks a complete mess.

YOUR
SENTENCES
Although you might be desperate
for a tattoo now, your tastes
might change and you’ll be stuck
with a horrible design.

see the tattoo for the first time.
Defiant and dangerous, this is
how people might (unfairly!)
perceive you if you get tattoos.

Travel Agent’s address
Dear Sir/Madam,
Having been a loyal Thomas Cook customer
for over ten years and having enjoyed many holidays in the
past through your usually excellent service, it is with regret
that I inform you of my disastrous holiday with your
company due to the horrific Gran Canaria Beach Hotel in Las
Palmas (1st-14th July).
