Introduction
Each field of psychology represents a specific area of
study focused on a particular topic. Because human
behavior is so varied, the number of subfields in
psychology is also constantly growing and evolving.
Some of these subfields have been firmly established
as areas of interest and have been taken up as career
choices.
01
Cognitive Psychology
The science of how we
think…
Cognitive Psychology… What is it?
Cognitive Psychology investigates mental processes involved in
acquisition, storage, manipulation, and transformation of
information received from the environment along with its use
and communication. It is both an experimental and clinical field
of psychology, aiming to understand how behavior and intellect
are influenced by brain function and concerned with the
diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. Cognitive
psychology is a relatively new development in the field of
psychology.
02
Neuropsychology
How the brain correlates with the
mind…
Neuropsychology as a branch
Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that is concerned with how a
person's cognition and behavior is related to the brain and the rest of the
nervous system. It often focus on how injuries or illnesses of the brain affect
cognitive and behavioral functions. Researchers are studying the role of
neurotransmitters or chemical substances which are responsible for neural
communication in different areas of the brain and, therefore, in associated
mental functions. Neuropsychologists conduct evaluations to characterize
behavioral and cognitive changes resulting from central nervous system
disease or injury, like Parkinson's disease or another movement disorder.
03
Social Psychology
Understanding an individual’s behavior in
social situations…
Social psychology: Comprehending Influence
of social norms
Social Psychology explores how people are affected by
their social environments and how people think and
influence others. Social psychologists study how
individuals think, influence and relate to one another and
how these interactions affect issues as wide-ranging as
prejudice, persuasion, friendship and aggression. It tries to
describe and explain human behavior in social situations
by reducing it to psychological variables. Social
psychology can be used in different areas of our lives such
as, our way of thinking, relationships, physical and mental
health etc.
04
Educational psychology
Learning about learning!
The scientific study of human learning
Educational psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with
the scientific study of human learning. The field of educational
psychology relies heavily on quantitative methods, including testing
and measurement, to enhance educational activities related to
instructional design, assessments, etc. They are also concerned with
research on issues of relevance for education, counselling and learning
problems. The field of educational psychology involves the study of
memory, conceptual processes, and individual differences (via cognitive
psychology) in conceptualizing new strategies for learning processes in
humans.
05
Clinical and Counselling Psychology
Mental health is as important as
physical health…
Clinical and Counselling Psychology
Psychologists who provide clinical or counseling services, assess and
treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. They use the science
of psychology to treat complex human problems and promote change.
It deals with causes, treatment and prevention of different types of
psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders
and chronic substance abuse. The work of clinical psychologists does not
differ from that of counselling psychologists although a counselling
psychologist sometimes deals with people who have less serious problems.

Because human conduct is so varied, the variety
of subfields in psychology is also continuously
developing and evolving. Some fields that have
surfaced are space psychology, military

Activity
What happened to the geography
teacher?
Who's the murderer??
On the first day of the school year, a geography
teacher was murdered. The police had 4 suspects: the
gardener, the math teacher, the coach, and the school
principal. They all had alibis:
•The gardener was cutting bushes.
•The math teacher was holding a mid-year test.
•The coach was playing basketball.
•The principal was in his office.
The killer was arrested immediately. Who killed
the geography teacher, and how did the police solve
the mystery?
Inner workings of the brain
The answer is the math teacher who was
‘conducting mid- terms’ in the beginning of the
year. One of the brain benefits of riddles and
puzzles is that they increase the production of
dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates
mood, memory, and concentration. Dopamine
is released with every success as we solve the
riddle. This is dealt with in the field of
cognitive psychology.
Conclusion
Psychology is such a huge topic and conveying the depth and breadth of
the subject can be difficult. As a result, a number of unique and
distinctive branches of psychology have emerged to deal with specific
subtopics within the study of the mind, brain, and behavior.
