Safety Precautions:
Wear safety goggles and gloves at all times. 6 M HCl and 6 M NaOH solutions are corrosive. If you
spill any on your skin, immediately flush with water and notify your instructor.
Procedure:
1. Perform each reaction according to the directions and record your observations.
2. If you see no immediate evidence of reaction, set the test tube aside for 10 minutes then
re-examine.
3. Complete the balanced chemical equation for each reaction that occurs. If there is no evidence of
reaction, write the words “no reaction” to the right of the arrow. (Use Activity Series or
Solubility Table to complete single or double replacement reactions)

1. Place ½ inch of magnesium ribbon in a test tube.
Add 10 drops of 6 M HCl and observe.

2. Place a piece of calcium metal in a test tube.

of 6M HCl and observe.

5. Add 25 drops of hydrogen peroxide in a test tube. Add
a pinch of *manganese IV oxide. Quickly light a
wooden splint, blow it out, and stick the glowing end

10 drops of 6 M HCl and observe.

10. Add 10 drops of 6 M HCl to a test tube. Slowly add
the same amount of 6 M NaOH, 1 drop at a time and
