Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter
Unit 1 Lesson 2 Properties of Matter
Physical Education
What are physical properties of matter?
• A characteristic of a substance that can be
observed without changing the identity of the
substance is called a physical property.
• All of the senses can be used to observe physical
properties.

Unit 1 Lesson 2 Properties of Matter
What are physical properties of matter?
• Mass and volume are physical properties.
How much matter
is in an object…
How much space
an object takes up

Density
• The amount of mass in a given volume
Odor: how a substance smells
Sweet, fruity, stinky, fresh, powdery, musty
Texture: how a substance feels to the touch
smooth
rough
soft
Color: the varying wavelengths of visible
light
Hardness:
- refers to how easy it is for an object to
change its shape, break apart or be
scratched.
ROCK – very hard
Play-dough –
Soft and squishy
States of Matter
• The state of matter is the physical form of
the matter.
The 3 states of matter are…
LIQUID
• Electrical conductivity is a measure of how well
electric currents move through a substance.
Wood does not
turn light on
Metal

• Thermal conductivity is the rate at which a substance
transfers heat.
The butter melts on the
metal spoon, just a little on
the wooden spoon and not
at all on the plastic spoon.
The metal spoon conducts
the heat of the water very
well.

• Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve in
another substance.
• Malleability is the ability of a substance to be rolled or
pounded into various shapes.

• Ductility is the ability of a substance to be
pulled into a wire or thread.

• Luster is how shiny or dull an object is….
• The melting point of a substance is the temperature at
which it changes from a solid to a liquid.
• The boiling point of a substance is the
temperature at which the substance
begins to turn from a liquid to a gas.
What are chemical properties of
matter?
• A chemical property describes the ability of a
substance to change into a new substance with
different properties.
• Flammability is the ability of a substance to burn.
• Reactivity is the ability of a substance to interact with
another substance and form one or more new
substances.
