Excerpt from: Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, given November 19, 1863 on the battlefield near
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA 1 Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought
forth upon this continent a new nation: conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal.2 Now we are engaged in a great civil war ...
testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated ... can long
endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. 3 We have come to dedicate a
portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this
nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

Acupuncture: Help or Hype?
By: Tracy Wilson
Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world.
Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture began to become better
known in the United States in 1971, when New York Times reporter James Reston wrote
about how doctors in China used needles to ease his pain after surgery.
1
The term acupuncture describes a family of procedures involving stimulation of anatomical
points on the body by a variety of techniques. American practices of acupuncture
incorporate medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other Eastern countries. The
acupuncture technique that has been most studied scientifically involves penetrating the
skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical
stimulation.
2
Acupuncture needles are metallic, solid, and hair-thin. People experience acupuncture
differently, but most feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted. Some people are
energized by treatment, while others feel relaxed. Improper needle placement, movement
of the patient, or a defect in the needle can cause soreness and pain during treatment. This
is why it is important to seek treatment from a qualified acupuncture practitioner.
3
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved acupuncture needles for use by
licensed practitioners in 1996. The FDA requires that sterile, nontoxic needles be used and
that they be labeled for single use by qualified practitioners only.
4
Relatively few complications from the use of acupuncture have been reported to the FDA
in light of the millions of people treated each year and the number of acupuncture needles
used. Still, complications have resulted from inadequate sterilization of needles and from
improper delivery of treatments. Practitioners should use a new set of disposable needles
taken from a sealed package for each patient and should swab treatment sites with alcohol
or another disinfectant before inserting needles. When not delivered properly, acupuncture
can cause serious adverse effects, including infections and punctured organs.
5
Acupuncture is one of the key components of the system of traditional Chinese medicine
(TCM). In the TCM system of medicine, the body is seen as a delicate balance of two
opposing and inseparable forces: yin and yang. Yin represents the cold, slow, or passive
principle, while yang represents the hot, excited, or active principle. Among the major
assumptions in TCM are that health is achieved by maintaining the body in a "balanced
state" and that disease is due to an internal imbalance of yin and yang. This imbalance
leads to blockage in the flow of qi (vital energy) along pathways known as meridians. It is
believed that there are 12 main meridians and 8 secondary meridians and that there are
more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body that connect with them.
6
Preclinical studies have documented acupuncture's effects, but they have not been able to
fully explain how acupuncture works within the framework of the Western system of
medicine that is commonly practiced in the United States. It is proposed that acupuncture
produces its effects through regulating the nervous system, thus aiding the activity of painkilling biochemicals such as endorphins and immune system cells at specific sites in the
body. In addition, studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by
changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones and, thus, affecting the parts
of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as
immune reactions and processes that regulate a person's blood pressure, blood flow, and
body temperature.
2) Which country is NOT LIKELY to be included in a research report about the origins of
acupuncture?
A) Brazil

strategy would be BEST to use when taking notes?
A) Summarize the first and last paragraphs.
B) Copy the main idea sentence from each paragraph.
C) Restate the main ideas and details in his or her own words.
D) Select the best sentences to include as quotes in the final project.

The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro
By: Fredrick Douglass
On July 5, 1852, Douglass gave a speech at an event commemorating the signing of the
Declaration of Independence, held at Rochester's Corinthian Hall. It was biting oratory, in
which the speaker told his audience, "This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may
rejoice, I must mourn." And he asked them, "Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking
me to speak to-day?"
1
Within the now-famous address is what historian Philip S. Foner has called "probably the
most moving passage in all of Douglass' speeches."
2
What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him,
more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the
constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license;
your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless;
your denunciation of tyrants brass fronted impudence; your shout of liberty and equality,
3
hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanks-givings, with all your
religious parade and solemnity, are to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and
hypocrisy -- a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There
is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the
people of the United States, at this very hour.
7)

constant victim.

C)
D)
dictionary definition BEST applies to the word gross as it is used in this sentence?

greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your
denunciation of tyrants brass fronted impudence; your shout of liberty and equality,
hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanks-givings, with all your
religious parade and solemnity, are to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and
hypocrisy -- a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.
Why did the author MOST likely use the words ‘a thin veil’ to describe how crimes are
covered up?
A) to emphasize the face of the savages
B) to show the darkness of the nation’s sin
C) to show how obvious the hypocrisy of religious slaveowners appeared to everyone
to inform readers that slave owners used veils to cover the eyes of slaves when they
D)
transported them
Explanation:
A veil represents a thing that separates, screens, or conceals. In this case, the image of a
veil is usedto show how obvious the hypocrisy of religious slaveowners appeared to
everyone. Religion was a screen that did not conceal slave owners' injustice.
