REMANENCE
NMP2-SE020120310240
This project is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme
for Research and Technological Development (FP7), the
European Union main instrument for funding research over
the period 2007 to 2013.

Rare Earth Magnet Recovery for

Rare Earth Materials:

The issues around the possible future restrictions to
supply of critical materials have been the subject of
debate for several years. In response to these an

Key Objectives:
Why is the project being funded?
The long term viability of many EU high-tech
industries and clean technologies is reliant on secure
supplies of rare earth materials. The short/medium
term security of supply is of concern due to both
resource limitations and political concerns. China
currently produces over 97% of all rare earth
materials and it is predicted that Chinese domestic

disposal/recycling
demand could outstrip production within the next
decade.
What problem does it address?
Currently there is no existing process for the recovery
of neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnets from
waste streams and this highly valuable material is lost
to land fill with no prospect of commercial recovery.
