연세대학교 응용해석 및 계산센터 세미나 Partial Differential Equations and Applied Mathematics Seminar Title Mathematical modeling of strongly nonlinear internal long wave motions Speaker Wooyoung Choi Affiliation Dept. of Mathematical Sciences, New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA Date May 31th, Tues., 4:00~ 5:00 Pm Location #420, ASTC, Yonsei University Abstract Highly nonlinear wave phenomena are ubiquitous in the ocean , including packets of large amplitude long internal waves in density-stratified coastal oceans. These waves whose amplitudes often exceed 100 m are typically generated by the interaction of stratified tidal flows with bottom topographies and their wave amplitudes often exceed 100 m. Previous attempts to model such waves with the weakly nonlinear asymptotic models, including the well-known Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, have led to poor quantitative agreement with laboratory and field observations. In this talk, I will introduce recent efforts to develop strongly nonlinear asymptotic models and describe their solitary wave solutions in comparison with the fully nonlinear Euler equations and laboratory experiments. In addition, surface expressions associated the internal wave motions observed on satellite images will be discussed.
