Elite Scholarships 2013/14: Emeka Egwuatu Rugby Football Bursaries
Applications are now open for the 2013/14 Elite Scholarships. Applicants wishing to apply must complete and
return the application form by Friday 11th October 2013 to Sports and Active Lifestyles Manager Anthony Currie.
Applicants will receive confirmation of their received application ahead of the Awarding Committees’ review of
all applications in mid-October. All candidates will then be emailed to inform them if they have been successful.
The Emeka Egwuatu Rugby Football Bursaries are available to student rugby players who are beginning their
studies at King’s in 2013/14. The bursaries were established at Guys Hospital RFC – the oldest rugby football club
in the world – to encourage and support student players who are enhancing the activities of the RFC or play rugby
at a higher representative level. A maximum of £2,000 (two thousand pounds sterling) can be allocated from the
Fund each calendar year. The primary intention is that the money available should be used to fund one or more
bursaries to provide financial support to players from either the Guy’s Hospital RFC or to any players from King’s
College London who wish to play for Guy’s Hospital RFC.
The award of a bursary can be renewed annually if the Committee believes the holder of the bursary has
continued to support the activities of Guy’s Hospital RFC (or represented Guy’s Hospital RFC at a higher
representative level of rugby), particularly in an active capacity, but cannot be held by any individual for more
than 4 years.
The bursaries are funded by a generous gift from Professor David Cooper and named after Professor Emeka
Egwuatu FRCOG who played for GHRFC between 1958 and 1964 and became Professor of obstetrics and
gynaecology in Nigeria. They recognise the contribution that Emeka Egwuatu made to Guys Hospital RFC when he
was a student at Guys in the 1950s and 1960s. He went on to a distinguished career in obstetrics and gynaecology
and medical education in his homeland of Nigeria.
Professor David K. C. Cooper, MD, PhD, FRCS
David K. C. Cooper is a heart transplant surgeon and researcher. He completed his medical education at Guys
Hospital, then trained in general surgery and heart surgery in the U.K. with periods of research at Harvard,
Cambridge, and London. In the late 1970s, he was a member of the team that performed the first successful series
of heart transplants in the U.K. In 1980, Dr. Cooper was appointed to the faculty of the University of Cape Town
Medical School in South Africa, where he had responsibility for the heart transplant program under Prof.
Christiaan Barnard. In 1987 he moved to Oklahoma City, where he continued his work in heart transplantation and
research, and later accepted a research appointment at Harvard Medical School. He is now director of a research
group at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he
also is a professor of surgery.
