 There are 1271 people in Fort Chipewyan
 Fort Chipewyan is located just off the north shore of
Lake Athabasca
 Named after the Chipewyan people living in the area

Weather and Temperature
 The Canadian Shield gets on average 250mm of rain in the summer
 In winter the Canadian Shield gets on average 117cm of snow
 July is the warmest month and the month with the maximum
precipitation
 Summers are short, warm and dry with highs of 23 ºC
 Winter is long and very cold with lows of -27ºC

Animal: Moose
 Male moose are called Bull moose
 Only Bull moose have antlers
 Female moose are called cows
 Each moose grows bigger antlers than the year before
 Bull moose are more aggressive in mating season
Moose
Animal: Pelican
 This region is the most northern nesting place in North
America for American White Pelicans
 Their nesting islands are found in the Slave River
 Does not dive for its prey but catches it while swimming
 They eat 4lbs of fish a day
 They feed together in groups of 20 or more to work together
to corral fish
Appearance
 Total area: 9719 km2 (1.5% of province)
 Average elevation: 275 m (range 150-400 m)
 Sparsely vegetated granite bedrock
 You can see rocks, hills, lakes, forests, beaches, sand dunes,
wetlands, and rapids
Industry
 Working in schools, heath care and for the government
 They also hunt, fish and trap
 They run businesses, work for oil, mining and forestry companies
in the Fort Chipewyan area and fight forest fires

 Oil and gas
 Pulp and paper
 Mining tar
Water
 Slave River is the only river in the Canadian shield
 Lake Athabasca is the only lake in the Canadian shield
Winter Recreational Activities
 Ice fishing, cross country skiing, playing hockey,
snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skating are winter
recreational activities
Summer Recreational Activities
 Canoeing, fishing, hunting and riding ATVs are summer
recreational activities
