About CASELAP
Centre for Advanced
Studies in Environmental
Law & Policy
CASELAP is a unique unit
of the University of Nairobi
operating at the level of a
faculty in the College of
Humanities and Social
Sciences (CHSS).
Its primary function is to
develop programmes of
postgraduate teaching,
research and outreach in
environmental law, policy
and diplomacy in order to
promote scholarship and
practice in environmental
governance.
CASELAP is dedicated to
undertaking research and
advanced level capacity
development in
environmental governance
through innovative and
market-driven programmes
that addresses national,
county and industry needs
by promoting sustainable
patterns of production and
consumption. Hence,
ensuring global
competitiveness,
conservation of natural
capital, and social
development key to ensuring
sustainability.


CASELAP core competencies
Our teaching programmes are at Masters
and Doctorate levels in Environmental
Policy and Environmental Law. We plan
courses in Environmental Diplomacy.
CASELAP principal focal areas of
research, capacity development, consultancy
and outreach are on adherence to norms,
procedures and institutional arrangements
for provision of sustainable development, as
well as a clean and healthy environment at
all levels.
CASELAP has a multidisciplinary team of
scientists, economists, lawyers and social
scientists with a strong capacity to support
the development of appropriate regulatory
frameworks that integrate principles of
green economic growth to key sectors. These
includes:
Infrastructure: energy, transport,
buildings, manufacturing, water, sanitation
and irrigation, public health;
Natural resources management:
agriculture, forestry, water resource
management, fisheries, land use, the
extractive industry, tourism; and
Resilience building: human capital,
gender equity and disaster risk
management.
Other competencies involve
coordinating lead authors; policy
drafting, analysis and review;
legislative drafting and reviewing;
environmental assessments, and
environmental resource valuations.
