BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Joseph K. Bump’s expertise is in studying the relationship between wildlife ecology and ecosystem processes,
ecophysiology, stable isotope ecology, and conservation science. Bump’s fundamental work is focused on
understanding mammalian control of forest nutrient dynamics, climate change effects on predator-prey
relationships, and aquatic-terrestrial links via herbivory. His applied work currently involves habitat modeling,
survival and mortality assessment, carnivore management, and migratory connectivity. He currently teaches
Mammalogy, a field course in Wildlife Habitat, Stable Isotope Ecology, and a section of Integrated Resource
Assessment (Capstone). Bump’s curiosity in the natural world began with a childhood spent mucking around the
Hudson River in upstate New York. Commercial salmon fishing in Alaska as an undergraduate and work at the
University of Michigan’s Biological Station confirmed his interest in wildlife ecology and conservation biology.
