• As of 24 August, the aviation alert level for the volcano
Bardarbunga has been lowered to Orange. The national
Civil Protection has returned to Alert Phase, downgrading
the Emergency Phase that was previously declared.
Scientific observations concluded that a sub-glacial
eruption did not occur on 23 August, although strong
seismic activity was still ongoing as of 24 August, with
earthquakes up to 5.3 M.

• CRISTOBAL is moving over the Atlantic Ocean, east of the
Bahamas, as a tropical storm.
• Heavy rains and floods have affected several Caribbean
islands. In Haiti, three people were killed and flood
damage was recorded in Saint-Marc, while at least 3 600
people were displaced and over 600 homes damaged or
destroyed in the flood-hit eastern and north-eastern
regions of the Dominican Republic. Flooding has also been
reported in the Providenciales (Turks and Caicos Islands).
• In the next 48 h, it is forecast to move over water, away
from land, intensifying.

magnitude 6.1 M (depth: 11 km) hit Napa County
(northern California). USGS-PAGER indicates shaking up
to “Severe” for 66 000 people.
• As of 25 August, media reported damage in Napa,
Solano and Sonoma Counties. There were over 100
people injured, electricity and transportation networks
damaged and fires in buildings.
• As of 24 August, the Governor of California declared a
State of Emergency, in order to deal with the aftermath
of the earthquake.
