“THAT WE MAY KNOW”
WE HAVE OVERCOME
1 John 5:1-5
Part Twenty Five
INTRODUCTION: Love is a major theme in John’s writings. Those born again have a love for God and
His children. This gives evidence of genuine salvation. In these verses John also writes of the victory
believers have over the world by faith in Jesus Christ.
I. POSSESSING OF LIFE
A. SCRIPTURAL BELIEF.
1. Belief in the humanity of Jesus. (1 John 4:2, Jesus is His earthly name)
2. Belief in the deity of Christ. (1 John 4:15, Christ is His heavenly name)
B. SPIRITUAL BIRTH.
1. Seed for spiritual birth. (1 Pet. 1:23; James 1:18)
2. Soil for spiritual birth. (Luke. 8:15)
3. Holy Spirit produces the new birth. (John 3:6-8)
II. PRACTICE OF LOVE
A. LOVE FOR THE FATHER. v. 2 “we love God”
1. Loving the Father by keeping His commandments.
2. Loving the Father by honoring His Son. (John 3:35; 5:20)
B. LOVE FOR THE FAMILY. (v. 2 “love the children of God;” (1 Jn. 4:21)
“With all lowliness (humility) and meekness, (gentleness, without retaliation) with longsuffering, (spirit of
patience under prolonged provocation) forbearing one another in love; (making allowance for the faults and
failures of others) Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Eph. 4:2-3)
III. POWER OF FAITH
A. OBJECT OF FAITH. (v. 5)
B. OBEDIENCE OF FAITH. (v. 3)
C. OVERCOMERS BY FAITH. (v. 4)
1. Deception of the world system.
a. Lies of Satan behind the world system. (John 8:44)
b. Lure of the world system. (1 John 2:15-16)
2. Destruction of the world system. (1 John 2:17)
3. Deliverance over the world system.
a. Abide in Christ. (John 15:10; 16:3)
b. Abide in the His Word. (I John 2:14)
c. Walk in His Light. (1 John 1:7)
LESSONS FOR LIFE:
1. Satan is our adversary. He uses the world to entice and entrap us. Worldliness is anything that lessens
our love for God, quenches our desire for the Word, hinders our service to God, and destroys our witness
for God.
2. Our old sinful fleshly nature lusts for the things of this world. The new nature desires God and the things
of God.
3. John wanted his readers to know they were saved. Are you saved today?
My favorite advice is that which has been given by children. When asked how people in love typically
behave:
(Wendy, age 8) “When a person gets kissed for the first time, they fall down and they don’t get up for
at least and hour.”
(Arnold, age 10) “Mooshy … like puppy dogs … except puppy dogs don’t wag their tails nearly as
much.”
(Shem, age 8) “All of sudden, the people get movies fever so they can sit together in the dark.”
When asked why love happens between two particular people:
(Andrew, age 6) “One of the people has freckles and so he finds somebody else who has freckles too.”
(Mae, age 7) “No one is sure why it happens, but I heard it has something to do with how you smell.
That’s why perfume and deodorant are so popular.”
(Manuel, age 8) “I think you’re supposed to get shot with an arrow or something, but the rest of it isn’t
supposed to be so painful.”
When asked on what falling in love is like:
(John, age 9) “Like an avalanche were you have to run for your life.”
(Glenn, age 7) “If falling in love is anything like learning how to spell, I don’t want to do it. It takes
too long.”
Some surefire ways to make a person fall in love with you:
(Del, age 6) “Tell them that you own a whole bunch of candy stores.”
(Manuel, age 8) “Yell out that you love them at the top of your lungs and don’t worry if their parents
are right there.”
(Alonzo, age 9) “Don’t do things like have smelly, green sneakers. You might get attention, but
attention ain’t the same thing as love.”
(Bart, age 9) “One way is to take the girl out to eat. Make sure it’s something she likes to eat. French
Fries usually work for me.”
How can you tell if two adults at a Restaurant are in love?
(Bobby, age 9) “Just see if the man picks up the check. That’s how you can tell if he’s in love.”
(Bart, age 9) “Lovers will just be staring at each other and their food will get cold. Other people care
more about their food.”
(Sandra, age 7) “See if the man has lipstick on his face.”
(Christine, age 9) “It’s love if they order one of those desserts that are on fire. They like to order those
because it just like how their hearts are – on fire.”
