Part 1: The Trust and the Department
Barts Health NHS Trust
Barts Health NHS Trust is one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers and the largest trust
in the NHS. It was created on 1 April 2012 by bringing together three trusts: Barts and The
London NHS Trust, Newham University Hospital NHS Trust and Whipps Cross University
Hospital NHS Trust. The new trust has a turnover of approximately £1.1 billion and
approximately 15,000 employees.
Together our hospitals – Mile End Hospital in Mile End, Newham University Hospital in
Plaistow, St Bartholomew’s (Barts) in the City, The Royal London in Whitechapel and Whipps
Cross in Leytonstone - deliver high quality clinical care to the people of East London and
further afield.
The hospitals offer a full portfolio of services that serve the needs of the local community,
and are home to some of Britain’s leading specialist centres including cancer, cardiac,
trauma and emergency care. Barts Health also has one of the UK’s busiest children’s
hospitals and internationally renowned surgical facilities.
Our vision is to create a world-class health organisation that builds on strong relations with
our partners and the communities we serve – one dedicated to ending the historic health
inequalities in east London. We will build an international reputation for excellence in
patient care, research and education. And as members of UCLPartners, the largest academic
health sciences system in the world, we will ensure that our patients are some of the first in
the country to benefit from the latest drugs and treatments.

Older People’s Services (OPS)
This post will be working on the Whipps Cross site. The catchment area covers Waltham
Forest, Eastern Redbridge and the neighbouring part of South West Essex. The department
provides for a broad spectrum of sub-specialist areas including: acute geriatrics,
orthogeriatrics, rehabilitation, surgical liaison, psychiatry liaison, falls clinic, outpatients and
Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Clinics. Developments in the near future include
expanding the orthopaedic and fracture liaison service, surgical liaison and POPS (Proactive
care of the older person undergoing surgery) services as well as developing frailty and better
falls pathways and further developing work in dementia and delirium management, and lots
more.
The inpatient service comprises of a separate geriatrics on-call with morning and afternoon
post-take ward rounds 7 days a week and ongoing care for patients on the Acute
Assessment Unit (AAU). There are four OPS acute wards – Blackthorn (23 beds), Birch (18
beds), Chestnut (22 beds) and Syringa (26 beds). There is care for outliers only on Acacia
Ward (Infection Control Ward). There is an inpatient rehabilitation ward Victory (19 beds).
There are also evolving services in orthogeriatrics, surgical laison, acute Geriatrics and frailty
(including a 7-bedded Acute Frailty Unit) as well as dementia care. Each acute ward has a
minimum of 2 SHOs on a daily basis, with an FY1 being based on Syringa and Blackthorn and
2 StR 3-7 higher trainees.
The Orthogeriatrics service is Consultant-led with 2 SHO-level junior doctors. Currently we
offer joint care with Orthopaedics of all inpatients with fractured neck of femur (typically
around 20).
The Surgical service is an excellent opportunity for service development. Currently the
patients remain under the care of the Surgical team with the Surgical junior doctors
supplying support to the Geriatrics service.
We have a daily geriatric clinic where patients are seen for comprehensive geriatric
assessments, post discharge follow up and as an admission alternative option (hot clinic).

develop within the preassessment area to optimise patients prior to their surgery.
We would be keen to explore development of a POPS service on this site.
Duties other than those clinical duties specified will be arranged in accordance with the

administrative duties associated with patient care.
4. Leadership, development and organisation of the services in their charge in line with the
Trusts’ business plans. Liaison and communication with the Lead Clinician for Older

both in and out of the hospital. This includes liaison with general practice with regard to
the ongoing management of patients with chronic conditions.
8. To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with colleagues within the department, other
clinical specialities within the Trust, General Practitioners, community services, and all
