The prerequisite requirements for the implementation of the didactic classes at the unit and a way of final evaluation: - knowledge of appropriate physical, motoric and emotional development of children - knowledge of the rules of physical examination of children in different developmental stages 5. Topics of the didactic classes at the unit Lectures 1. Emerging infectious diseases in children. 2. Pertussis (whooping cough) – classic and mild form – diagnosis, treatment regimens. 3. Congenital and acquired VZV infections in children. 4. Acute Viral Hepatitis B, C 5. HIV Infection in children: clinical manifestation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment regimens. 6. Nosocomial infections in children – etiological factors (multiresistant bacteria strains, viruses), the most frequent clinical manifestations. 7. A new approach to childhood tuberculosis. 8. Pediatric tuberculosis: diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. 9. Invasive meningococcal disease in children as a life-threatening disease Seminars: 1. Common viral exanthems in children 2. Common bacterial exanthems in children 3. Chosen parasitic diseases: congenital and acquired toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis. Labs 1. Prevention of nosocomial infections in the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (chain of infections, isolation precautions for the control of nosocomial infections, technical skill of the proper hand hygiene) – 4 hours 2. Acute infectious gastroenteritis in children - causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, complications and prevention, dehydration assessment, fluid, electrolyte and acid-base imbalance management; dietary treatment of gastroenteritis in children – 3 hours 3. Diagnosing and treatment of tick-borne diseases: Lyme disease, Tick-borne encephalitis. Interpretation of serological tests – 3 hours. 4. Purulent meningitis in children: causes, clinical characteristics, outpatient and hospital management. Preparing patients for lumbar puncture depending on child’s age. Throat swabs collecting – appropriate technique – 3 hours. 5. Viral Central Nervous System infections in children – differential diagnosis, management, treatment – 3 hours 6. Infectious mononucleosis (EBV, CMV) – differential diagnosis, treatment – 2 hours 7. Verminous and parasitic diseases – Ascaris Lumbricoides, Giardiasis, scabies – diagnostic issues 3 hours 8. Credit: Test and practical examination – 3 hours Elective courses: “Imported” infectious diseases in children; hematologic abnormalities in pediatric infectious diseases; neglected childhood infectious diseases, enhancement of knowledge on infectious liver diseases in children; viral infections with Herpesviridae family agents; practice at the Admission Unit of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. 6. A way and a form of final evaluation the whole course at the unit: Practical credit of physical examination, differential diagnosis, evaluation of suggested lab test results and treatment.
