Cold Sores A Word about Cold Sores It’s important to understand that genital herpes is related to another common condition: cold sores. They are both caused by a herpes virus, and the HSV-‐1 that usually causes cold sores is a growing cause of genital herpes. In addition, many people with genital herpes also suffer from cold sores, so take a moment to find out how to treat them. Treating Cold Sores with VALTREX If you suffer form cold sores, you may find that you “just deal” with it whenever you have a cold sore outbreak. Maybe you avoid social situations during an outbreak, or try to cover up your cold sores with make-‐up. But have you considered talking to your doctor or healthcare provider about cold sores? Since cold sores are a medical condition just like genital herpes, your doctor can help. He or she can write a prescription for VALTREX, which attacks the cold sore virus from within. VALTREX is the first and only oral one-‐day treatment for cold sores. How do I take VALTREX for Cold Sores? The recommended dose is 2 grams taken at the first sign of a cold sore, such as tingling, itching, or burning and then again, about 12 hours later. When treating cold sores with VALTREX, you should not take it for more than one day. Be prepared by having VALTREX on hand, so you’ll be ready as soon as you feel a cold sore coming on. Talk to your doctor to find out if VALTREX is right for you. There is no cure for herpes. Even with treatment, it may be possible to spread the herpes virus to others. There are no studies that show if VALTREX works when used after the appearance of a cold sore, such as bumps, blisters or sores. Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems because the dosage of VALTREX may need to be adjusted. While taking VALTREX for cold sores, you should not exceed one day of treatment, two dosed taken 12 hours apart. Tell your doctor if your immune system is not normal because of advanced HIV disease, bone marrow or kidney transplant to avoid a potentially serious complication. Common side effects are headache nausea, abdominal pain, and dizziness.
