Beebe Healthcare CELEBRATING 100 YEARS 1916 Beebe Hospital 1921 Beebe School of Nursing The Beebe School of Nursing was founded in 1921, at the request of a young girl seeking advanced nursing education in her hometown. Berlin, MD, perform the first total laparoscopic hysterectomy together. 1993 Women’s Health Women’s Health Pavilion opened as a new unit in 1993 1999 Emergency Department Expansion Beebe expands the Lewes Emergency Department from 12 to 18 beds. 2000 First Endo AAA Repair 2003 Bookhammer Outpatient Center at the Beebe Health Campus Mayer Katz, MD, performs Beebe’s first endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm Bookhammer Outpatient Center at repair. the Beebe Health Campus opens to serve patients west of Route One for outpatient services, including diagnostic imaging, mammography, express testing, and physical therapy. 2008 Hudson Wing The hospital’s Rollins Wing doubles the size of the Emergency Department from 18 to 36 beds, relocates and expands the Critical Care Unit (from 12 to 20 beds) above the Emergency Department, and adds a 42-bed Medical-Surgical Unit above the CCU. 1927 Shaw Wing Benjamin F. and Helen M. Shaw were benevolent gift-givers to the hospital who donated two wings. The first, which was c ompleted in 1921, raised the bed capacity to 35. The Shaws donated another wing in 1927 in memory of their daughter, Natalie Townsend Shaw. The second wing brought the total bed capacity to 60. 1980 Orthopaedic Surgery 1970 Lynch Wing The five-story Lynch Wing, started in 1962 as a two-story building and expanded by 1970, was the first major addition to Beebe in 25 years. When it was first constructed, it was considered by hospital authorities to be one of the most modern hospital facilities in the region. 1985 Rollins Wing Beebe adds its five-story Rollins Wing, named for John W. Rollins. The new structure, coupled with renovations to the Lynch Wing, now boasts 58 state-ofthe-art patient rooms, a critical care unit, consolidation of an outpatient treatment center and same-day surgery, and expansion of diagnostic imaging and emergency services. Home Care Services Beebe has been caring for people in their homes since 1985. 1998 Beebe Medical Foundation Beebe Medical Foundation is established under the guidance of its Chairman, the Honorable Eugene Bookhammer. Cardiac Catheterization First diagnostic cardiac catheterization is performed at Beebe by Kenneth Sunnergren, MD. 2007 Cardiac Surgery The Cardiac Surgery program begins, opening the doors for a continually expanding Cardiac program. Dr. Fernando Garzia performs the first open heart procedure in Sussex County. Award-winning Orthopaedic Services 2011 Stroke Center Beebe Medical Center is Certified as a Stroke Center by the Joint Commission. Tunnell Cancer Center Receives Continued Accreditation The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons grants a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation to the Tunnell Cancer Center. This is the third time that Tunnell Cancer Center has gained the coveted Commendation designation as part of the Certificate of Accreditation, although Tunnell Cancer Center has consistently received accreditation from the Commission on Cancer. Excellence in Women’s Health American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS) names Beebe a Center of Excellence in Women’s Health First Hospital in Delaware to be named Baby-Friendly Beebe HealthyBack Beebe HealthyBack opened offering people a non-surgical approach to chronic back and neck pain. Beebe Healthcare offers digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), also known as 3D mammography. Beebe begins measuring patient satisfaction feedback. Clinical Building Tunnell Cancer Center, which brought the first Radiation Oncology program to Sussex County, opens. 2006 Cardiac Stent First cardiac stent in Catheterization lab by Dr. Stephanie Goodwin. Tunnell Cancer Center Tunnell Cancer Center moves into a new building at the Beebe Health Campus on Rt. 24. 2012 Partnership with Nanticoke Cancer Care Services Nanticoke Cancer Care Services in Seaford, and Beebe’s Tunnell Cancer Center, are affiliated, allowing Beebe’s medical and radiation oncology physicians to treat patients at Nanticoke and keeping cancer care in Sussex County. 2013 Distinguished Hospital™ Heathgrades® recognizes Beebe as a Distinguished Hospital™, for the fourth year in a row. Recognized Heart Attack Care American Heart Association recognizes Beebe Medical Center’s heart attack care. Radio-frequency Ablations Carotid Artery Stenting 3D Mammography 1995 Patient Satisfaction Healthgrades® ranks Beebe Healthcare in the top 5% in the nation for overall Orthopaedic Services. Firas El-Sabbagh, MD, performs Beebe’s first radiofrequency ablation to the heart to treat atrial fibrillation; Michael Ramjattansingh, MD, performs Beebe’s first radiofrequency ablation to treat liver cancer. 2014 Women’s Health 2015 Ornish Reversal Program Built by the Beebe brothers themselves, the structure was the birthplace of Beebe Hospital. Drs. James and Richard constructed the hospital on cement blocks along with their father, which still stands today. The brothers’ original office, formerly owned by Dr. Hall, was moved adjacent to the small constructed hospital. Inside the walls of the newly constructed hospital was just enough space for two patient rooms and an office. The brothers were joined by a staff of two nurses and Dr. James Beebe’s wife Elsie, who did all the cooking for the hospital. James P. Marvel, Jr., MD, is the first Board Certified orthopaedic surgeon at Beebe. 1983 Millville Services 1988 Beebe Medical Center beebehealthcare.org Beebe’s first carotid artery stenting procedure performed by Jonathan Kittredge, MD. Breast Health Program The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), granted Beebe Healthcare’s Breast Health Program a three-year/full accreditation and Beebe is the first hospital in DE to receive it. Beebe Becomes Beebe Healthcare Rehoboth Beach Services First Hospital on Delmarva to open The Ornish Rehoboth outpatient services expand Reversal Program. This program is nationally to include Walk-in care. recognized—through the results of more than 35 years of peer-reviewed, published research— for preventing, stopping, and even reversing the progression of heart disease.
