A Mí Me Gusta... - 1 I Like... - Wayne Brewer There are two phrases that can be heard sometimes in the church and they are: "I like..." and "I don't like..." It is fine to have a preference about something that belongs to the realm of opinions because God gave us the liberty to do so. The church can express an opinion of what it likes or does not like with respect to the meeting hour, duration of the worship, where to worship, the number of songs, prayers, if we are going to meet in a building, park, house, etc. Every congregation has the liberty to make its own decisions with wisdom, to complete the objective of doing the will of God and taking into account certain biblical principles. First, the doctrine of Christ does not depend upon what I like or do not like. The standard of the doctrine of Christ is not us, but is only the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17, John 12:48). There are doctrinal things that can not be changed, will not change and never will belong to the realm of opinions. For example: the command that the church is to meet every first day of the week (Hebrews 10:25, Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2) does not pertain to opinions. The doctrine of Christ never will be directed by the opinions of men, however there are brethren that try to do so because they do not study the Word of God (Acts 17:23) or simply have the desire to elevate their own will (3 John 9). An example: there are brethren that say that the sisters can lead prayer when the men are present because it is not a public worship service, but it is not so and does not pertain to the realm of opinions because Paul had written "that the men pray everywhere..." (1 Timothy 2:8). It is an error to call something "opinion" when it is not so. Second, it is an error to reject the doctrine in order to have your preference. One manner to do this is to reject the preacher or teacher that teaches the truth (Acts 2:42, 17:11, 2 Timothy 4:2, Galatians 1:69) only because one does not like the preacher's style, personality or he is not an actor that makes one laugh often, but to have someone in front that entertains, but does not teach the doctrine of God. Those who do so should be very carful. If one teaches the truth then we should be very content for that. The expressions "I like" or "I don't like" should always be directed by the Word of God and Christian love (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). - Wayne Brewer
