The Ron Castan Memorial - Indigenous Peoples’ Scholarship The Ron Castan Indigenous Peoples’ Scholarship Fund is an initiative of the Australian Friends of the Hebrew University. The Scholarship is aimed for Indigenous Australian Professional Workers in the field of public health and community medicine. The participants attend a one year program for a Masters Degree in Public Health at the Hebrew University School of Public Health and Community Medicine. The specific objectives of the course are: 1. To provide professional workers in the field of public health and community medicine with knowledge and practical experience. 2. To develop basic skills in the following areas: Principles and uses of epidemiology Diagnosis of the state of health a community Planning and implementation of community care programs through primary health care services, the “healthy city” concept, district health management and other strategies. Sociological and behavioural factors related to public health – Principles of health administration, health economics and health systems Evaluation of health services Principles of public health practice, planning and administration Principles of measurement in public health practice, eg survey methods, biostatistics Planning and carrying out of research projects in the fields of public health and community medicine Control of communicable diseases Environmental health, including air and water pollution, and proper sanitation Industrial and occupational health Since 1998, the Australian Friends of the Hebrew University on behalf of the Ron Castan Memorial – Indigenous People’s Scholarship fund is proud to contribute three returning Indigenous doctors with a Masters Degree in Public Health from the Hebrew University to their own communities.
