The Commission and the Member States will:
EU Forest Strategy
•set up of the Forest Information System for Europe by:
collecting harmonized Europe-wide information on the multifunctional role of forests and forest
resources and
integrating diverse information systems (e.g. EFFIS) and data platforms (e.g. EFDAC) into a
dynamic modular system that combines data and models into applications;
developing several modules, e.g. on (1) forests and natural disturbances like fires and pests,
(2) forest and the bio–economy, (3) forests and climate change and (4) forest and
ecosystem services

On-going activities in collaboration forest services in the countries:
SC13 - Development of a harmonized forest biomass assessment method
and dataset for Europe
• Develop a harmonized approach for above ground biomass estimation in
Europe at plot, INSPIRE grid and NUTS level
• Participating countries 17 (FI, DE, AU, CZ, FR, IE, IT, LV, LT, NL, NO, RO,
SK, ES, SE, CH, CY)
• Results by the end of 2014

On-going activities in collaboration Forest Services in the countries:
Development of the European Forestry Dynamics Model (EFDM)
•Forest resources assessment model for policy impact analysis
•Prototype ready March 2013 – Pilot development and initial testing in 5
countries (FI, SE, AU, FR, PT)
•SC14 - Further development and testing in 6 countries (FI, SE, CZ, FR, DE,
LT).
•Results end of 2014
•SC15 - Development of non-even management module of EFDM – 8
countries (SE, FI, AU, FR, NL, SI, PT, ES, CH)
•Results in 2015

Further steps in the development of FISE:
•Prototype ready end of 2014
•Further development of the European Forest Data Centre metada catalogue
– INSPIRE compliance.
•Enhancement of FISE interface to provide quick access to forest information,
data and models (EU Public License policy).
•Integration of project model, results, etc. from Horizon2020 projects - next
7 years Research Framework Program.
•Integration of LIFE+ projects results and Copernicus forest-related data
layers
•Strengthening links with on-going projects/initiatives in the module areas of
FISE.
