JOB PURPOSE The Healthcare Worker is a person who assists trained nurses with their duties and who actively participates in the delivery of patient care as an unqualified nurse in the multidisciplinary team within the service area. 3. SCOPE AND RANGE The Ward is classed as Acute Medical Rehabilitation with 12 beds and 24hrs Casualty attached. The Ward accepts patients with acute confusion; patients for palliative care; terminal illness; rehab after surgery; admissions from the community; recuperating MRSA patients and depressed patients. A very diverse range of patients from those requiring minimal supervision to those who are extremely physically disabled requiring constant attention and the use of mechanical lifting aids and manual handling techniques. Freedom to act up to the level of responsibility. On night duty – to work on own initiative while the Senior Nurse is attending minor injuries or assisting doctor in Casualty. To answer telephone as Hospital switchboard in a confidential manner. 5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 6. 7. Conveys relevant information and receives feedback from other members of the multidisciplinary team. Demonstrates delivery of a high standard of nursing care under the guidance and supervision of trained nursing personnel. Actively participates in health promotion and rehabilitation. SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT The post holder is required to directly use and maintain manual handling aids as required by the specific service i.e. Mangar airflow lifting cushion; Macanaids ambulift; Portastand; Electric hoist, Arjo walker; Oxford Hoist major; Oxford Hoist mini; Oxford Hoist major electrical; Arjo Steady; Phil – e – slide sheets; glide sheets; Pat slide; Handling belts; specialised beds including Elenganza 3000 electric bed; Cairwave Therapy bed; Quattro plus mattress; Spenco mattress; Pegasus bed. The post holder is responsible for cleaning suction pumps and enteral feed pumps The post holder is required to keep up to date certain documents pertaining to patient care i.e. Fluid balance charts; Activities of daily living; Food intake charts; Bowel charts; Sleep charts. The post holder is required to report any incidents according to the Occurrence Reporting System – Datix System DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS The post holder is responsible for the delivery of care to the maximum of 12 patients, delegated by the nurse in charge who has overall responsibility. The post holder should understand the necessity of working with others effectively and as part of a team The post holder is required to use own initiative and judgement especially when working unsupervised and unassisted for periods. The post holder is responsible for reporting any changes to the Senior Nurse as soon as possible 8. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS The post holder is required to provide and receive oral communication from staff members, patients, carers and the multi disciplinary team, in a professional manner. The post holder is required to take and pass on information which requires tact, diplomacy and confidentiality e.g. NHS 24; Public telephoning for information about casualty and/or relatives. The post holder is required to use persuasive, motivational, empathetic reassurance and negotiating skills within the ward setting particularly when working with severely demented, deaf or hard of hearing patients. The post holder should be able to use skills to break down barriers of understanding due to patients’ blindness, dementia and learning difficulties. They should also be able to deal with bereavement, aggression and communication difficulties. 9. Basic I.T. Skills to complete KSF, education packages and other documentation on- line. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB A high proportion of the job entails ongoing manual handling as patients are elderly, bedbound, palliative, terminal, and quadriplegic and rehabilitation i.e. heavy plaster casts, or have MS. The job also entails working in confined spaces if there is a sudden collapse or cardiac arrest. 10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB Mental Effort Dealing with diverse patients groups, e.g. dementia, hard of hearing. Dealing with difficult/aggressive behaviour, e.g. dementia, inebriated clients at casualty. Acting as Receptionist for Casualty Department and operating Hospital Switchboard during the evening/night duty. Dealing with emergency situations, e.g. sudden collapse, cardiac arrest. Emotional Effort The post holder experiences deep emotions when dealing with the palliative and terminal patients. Caring for them and nursing them over their final illness involves becoming close and this is felt keenly when the patient dies and last offices have to be performed. Working Conditions Occasionally the post holder has to work in unpleasant conditions arising from aggressive behaviour of patients; dealing with body fluids, i.e. emptying bedpans, urine bags, colostomy or stoma bags, vomit bowls, sputum cups; collecting specimens for the laboratory, i.e. urine, faeces and sputum; working with soiled linen soaked in urine and faeces; dealing with patients suffering from infectious diseases, MRSA or vomiting and diarrhoea. 11. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB The post holder is required to possess a caring, friendly disposition, using extended knowledge and practice to deliver individualised patient care to meet the requirements of patients as recommended by Health Care Professions. Good communication skills, good observation skills, being physically fit, being able to work without supervision, good people skills and being reliable, flexible and responsible are all requirements of the post.
