22nd Annual
Oakland Scientific
Conference
Wednesday, May 4, 2016
9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
1.Real-Time PCR Training Seminar
Carnegie I Part I: 10:00-10:45 AM
Part II: 11:00 – 11:45 AM
Speaker:
Mike Troutman, Senior Scientific Liaison,
Thermo Fisher Scientific
The seminar will begin with a basic introduction and tutorial of Real-Time PCR to include
terminology, reaction components, amplification, assay design, optimization, reference and
control options. Following the introduction, an overview of qPCR-associated applications
and solutions will be discussed, to include DNA (mutation detection, single nucleotide
polymorphisms/SNPs and high resolution melt/HRM), RNA (gene expression and small RNAs)
and protein analysis (protein expression and thermal shift applications).
2. The Science of Western Blotting - Proven Strategies to
Optimize Your Western Blots
Carnegie II 10:00 – 10:45 AM
Formerly the Holiday Inn — same location!
Next to Alumni Hall
Morning—Coffee, Tea, Pastries, Bagels in Prehall
Lunch—Served at Noon in Ballroom
Flavored Coffee—Served All Day in Prehall
Speaker:
Joseph Kramer, Director of Sales, North America,
Millipore Sigma
Western blotting is a cornerstone of protein research and is used extensively to detect and
quantify proteins in complex mixtures. Optimization of reagent concentrations, materials and
technique is key to successful blotting. Rethink Western blotting to take protein detection
to new dimensions. The SNAP i.d. 2.0 unique vacuum-driven technology promotes antigen
binding and thorough washing, enabling you to better optimize your Western blotting
conditions - in 30 minutes or less.

3. The Current Landscape of Biological Testing using High
Content Analysis
Carnegie II 11:00-11:45 AM
12:45 – 1:30 PM
Speaker:
Nicholas M. Radio, Ph.D., Technical Sales Specialist,
Thermo Fisher Scientific
High Content Analysis is an image cytometry-based methodology used to measure cellular
and small organism biology. The automated nature of the imaging and quantitative
analysis enables the ability to measure numerous timepoints and concentrations that are
conventionally difficult to accomplish using manual methods. This technical seminar will
provide an overview of applications where the technology is applied, including receptor
activation, cellular signaling, viability, morphology and motility phenotypes.
4. Materials and Systems for Optimizing 3D Cell Culture
Environments
Carnegie I 12:45-1:30 PM
Speaker:
Mark Rothenberg, Manager Scientific Training and
Education, Corning, Inc.
Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture environments provide structural and biochemical cues
for cellular differentiation and functionality. For specialized cell types such as primary cells
and stem cells, a two-dimensional (2D) growth substrate may not be sufficient to support
complex cellular behaviors such as cell polarity, morphology, spheroid formation, signal
transduction and tissue-specific gene expression. This seminar will highlight applications
that rely on the use of 3D growth substrates and specialized culture systems (i.e., permeable
supports). The biological and functional properties of a variety of cell types will be discussed
to demonstrate the effectiveness of these environments.
