Program.BeinganativeofasmalltownintheBlueRidge
Mountains,shehasastrongdesiretotrainexcellentmedical
providers,inthehopestheywillconsiderpracticinginruralareas.
Uponjoiningthefacultyin2012,shebringsalmost10yearsof
clinicalexperienceinavarietyofbackgrounds,including:primary
care,urgentcare,occupationalhealthandsurgicaloncology.She
hasstronginterestsinWomen'sHealth,RuralHealthandGeriatrics
andisaHRSAGeriatricWorkforceEnhancementProgramgrant
collaboratorwithECUCollegeofNursingandBrodySchoolof
Medicine.Shecurrentlypracticesfamilymedicineandgeriatrics.
Researchinterestsincludeinterprofessionaleducationandsimulationexperiences.
WhatdoyoulikebestaboutworkingatECU?
FeelinglikeI’mcontributingtothenextgenerationofhealthcareproviders.Itwashardleavingfulltime
clinicalpracticeasaPhysicianAssistanttocometoacademia,becauseIfeltlikeIdidmybesttowork
withintegrityandexcellence,todothebestbymypatients.ButIquicklyrealizedinthisfacultyrole,I
havethepotentialtoinfluence35studentsayeartobejustascommittedtothosepatients,andthatis
veryrewarding.
Whatdoyoufindmostexcitingaboutyourresearchanditspotential?
Thepotentialabilitytotransformhowweeducateourmedicalprovidersandhowthiscangenerate
betterpatientoutcomes.Haveyouevertakentimetospeakwithapatientwithcomorbiditieswhogoes
toamedicaloffice?Theymanytimesleaveconfused,frustrated,referredsomewhereelseandunsure
ofwheretogoorwhattodonext(orunsurewhytheyaresupposedtobeimplementingchangesin
medicines,lifestyle,etc).ItexcitesmethatIcanhelpthemfeelbettercaredfor,listenedto,and
educated.Thisisespeciallyimportantinprimarycare.WehavealotofagingruralNorthCaroliniansout
there!
Whatexcitesyouaboutteaching?
Whenwefindaninnovativewaytomakethematerial"stick"andwhenwefindawaytodothat
efficiently.
Whatdoyouhopestudentstakeawayfromtheirexperiencesfromworkingwithyouonyour
research?
Thattherearemorepeopleinthisteamofprovidersthanjustthemselves.Theyarenottheonlyperson
whocancarrytheburdenofpatientcare.TherearePAs,NPs,MDswhocanallcarrythatoverallburden
together,andtherearenursesandalliedhealthprofessionalswhocanalsosupportthepatient/family
tomakethisteamworkmoreefficiently.Also,IhopetheycanappreciateEVERYmemberofthe
healthcareteamfromthenursingassistantscleaninguppatientstotheCEOofthehospitalsystem.Each
personinthisteamisimportant.Eachplaysapartthat,ifmissing,wouldresultinpooroutcomes.Each
personneedstoberespectedandheard.Ithinkthisboilsdowntorespect,communication,integrity,
shared-responsibilityandmutualsupport.
