Caledonia Clean Energy Project
Developing our Energy Future
Alan Simpson
All Energy - 2016
Summit Power Group
• U.S. developer of clean-energy power plants over 25 years
• Co-founded by former U.S. Secretary of Energy
• Developed 8 GW including wind, solar, CCGT and IGCC with CO2
capture & sequestration
• Currently working on
– Texas Clean Energy Project (TCEP) – polygeneration gasification project with
90+% CO2 pre-combustion capture nearing financial close
– Caledonia Clean Energy Project (CCEP) – polygeneration gasification project
with 90+% CO2 pre-combustion capture at feasibility stage
– Retrofits of coal & gas-fired plants for post-combustion CO2 capture
• U.S. inward investment perspective
1
CCEP Overview
• Second of a kind IGCC Plant following Texas Clean Energy Project (TCEP)
• 570MW low carbon electricity for a million UK homes
• 3.8 Mt/yr CO2 Captured – Over 90%
• Re-use of existing pipeline systems
• Linking Central Scotland with the Central North Sea - 88% of Scotland’s
industrial CO2 emissions within 20km of Feeder 10

Future CO2 Import to
Peterhead Harbour
• Storage in proven offshore saline formation
• EOR Ready: Independent of Oil Company decision
• Anchor to develop Scottish East Coast Cluster
• Development of St Fergus as a CO2 Hub
2
Clean-Industry-Power
• 570MWe gasification plant w ~ 90% CO2 capture from coal
• Proposed site at Grangemouth, Firth of Forth
• Lower Cost - Lower Risk
– Make best use of existing onshore & off-shore transport
infrastructure for CO2
– Focus on well proven technology - Siemens/GE/CB&I
– Lessons learnt from previous US and UK experience
• Higher Value
– Anchor industrial CO2 capture and North Sea CO2 Hub
– Polygeneration potential to kick start large scale H2 production
• CCEP will seek a Contract for Difference (CfD) for
electricity generated and contracts to govern other
commercial arrangements – no capital grant required

CCEP – Study Overview
• Grant Agreement (£4.23M) concluded mid Oct for Industrial
Research & Feasibility Study (total c. £6M)
• Mobilisation of activity Oct-Dec 2015
– WP1: Industrial research and development, resulting in the preliminary
design and notional pricing of CCEP.
– WP2: Feasibility study of requirements, constraints and mitigation including
grid connection, planning and regulatory requirements, and financing
considerations.
– WP3: Obtain required site options and/or exclusivity agreement(s) as project
enablers
• Technical assessments largely complete by Q3 2016
• Commercial analysis ongoing – new approaches required by
industry and government

Scenarios - Configuration
• Power & Capture
– IGCC; feedstock quality, configuration implications, heat & mass
balance, basis of design, layout implications, logistics etc
– Benchmark against natural gas with CCS
– H2 for heat & transport – business case depends on appetite
• Transport
– Feeder 10 to St Fergus; extensively studied already
– St Fergus to offshore location; existing pipeline/new pipeline


• Storage
– Via subsea/platform, reservoir/sandstone, single build
solution/phased build solution
• Business Case for Government & Industry
– Need commercial innovation and collaboration on clusters

Scenarios - Configuration
17
Unique Opportunity
• Opportunity to develop a new commercial delivery model for UK CCS
– focus on high value regional clusters and cost effective phasing
• Build on US, UK and European technical and commercial know how
• CCEP locational advantage lowers cost and risk
– potential to use largely existing transportation infrastructure
– tie in to best understood storage area in UK
• Decarbonize Scottish industry and support Maximum Economic
Recovery from North Sea
• Essential low carbon “base-load” electricity generation in Central
Scotland
• Collaborative approach required to build an investable business case
for both Government & Industry
