Sport Science Revision sheet Why do we warm up? Prevent Injury and muscle stiffness Ensure muscles are warm Prepare the body physically and mentally Raise the heart rate gradually What is involved in a warm up? Pulse raiser (5 mins)– gentle jogging or light exercise to raise the heart rate gradually and increase body temperature. Ideally this needs to directly relate to the sporting activity. For example, if taking part in football the pulse raiser should include a football. Dynamic stretching (5 mins) - This will help reduce muscle stiffness and should be appropriate to movements that will be experienced in the sport/event. Make sure you start at the ankles and work your way up the body so no muscles are missed out. Stretches should be held for 5-8 seconds and emphasis is on quality not quantity. Skills related to the activity (5-10 mins) – Introduce basic skills into the warm up that will relate to what you are going to do in the main session. For example in Rugby you may introduce some basic ball handling skills and then build on these in the main session. HOMEWORK Revise for Half term test topics to revise for…. 1. 2. 3. 4.
