Newborn Coverage Policy for the first
31 Days of Birth
When Alliant Health Plans covers the mother and/or father of a newborn or adopted child, the
child is covered for 31 days from the date of birth or assumption of legal responsibility.
However, the child is not automatically added to the policy. The child must be added to the
policy as required by policy type and a premium must be paid in order for the child’s coverage
to continue to the 32nd day and beyond. If only one parent is covered, Alliant will seek
additional coverage information from the covered parent.
Federally Funded Health Insurance Marketplace SoloCare and SimpleCare Policies
If the parent’s plan was purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace, the subscriber
must notify Healthcare.gov. The subscriber will then be billed for the child’s coverage,
effective on the date of birth or assumption of legal responsibility.
SoloCare Policies (Off-Marketplace)
If the parent’s plan was purchased outside of the Health Insurance Marketplace, the subscriber
must notify Alliant in writing by submitting an enrollment application. The subscriber will then be
billed for the child’s coverage, effective on the date of birth or assumption of legal responsibility.
SimpleCare Policies (Off-Marketplace)
If the parent’s plan was obtained through a group policy, the subscriber must notify their
employer. The employer must then submit a new enrollment form in order to add the child to
the existing policy. The employer group will then be billed for the child’s coverage, effective on
the date of birth or assumption of legal responsibility.
Note: Parents may choose to waive all coverage of a child by notifying Alliant in writing.
