Email: [email protected] Fax: 1-305-348-3707 Submitted: Thursday, February 24, 2005, 12:04:03 AM Title: Nanoscale Memory Devices Abstract: During the last two years, for the first time since its inception over half a century ago, the multi-billion-dollar data storage industry has not experienced any progress in the areal density growth rate. Due to the superparamagnetic limit, longitudinal magnetic recording which has been the core technology during all these years is finally facing its end. This fundamental limit appears to be much below the one-terabit-per-square-inch mark as earlier expected. Despite such a disappointment with the classical technology, the demand for more memory is exponentially growing every day. This talk will discuss the latest accomplishments in the field of magnetic recording to defer the superparamagnetic limit to higher areal densities. Perpendicular magnetic recording will be analyzed as the most likely candidate to replace the conventional technology for the next decade or so. Furthermore, three-dimensional magnetic recording will be discussed as the next step in the data storage industry. Finally, protein-based memory will be analyzed as the ultimate memory at a single-molecule level.
