Dr. Paul Frantz has been the Medical Director for Carilion Clinic’s Cardiac Services since 1996. Dr. Frantz attended
Georgetown University Medical School and completed his General Surgery and Cardiothoracic residencies at UNC
Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. He was President of Cardiovascular Surgical Associates, Inc. from 1982 until 2004.
Dr. Frantz is a pioneer of the Heart Alert Program at Carilion Clinic and has provided numerous presentations at the
HeartNet of the Virginias Annual Cardiac Symposium as the Medical Director for HeartNet of the Virginias.

Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia
Dr. David Sane is the Section Chief of Cardiology for Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine,
and is the Program Director for the Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship Program. He received his undergraduate degree
in physics from Wake Forest University and his Medical Degree from Duke University, where he also completed his
residency and cardiology fellowship. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine Cardiology and served as Professor of
Internal Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Sane’s research has been published in more than
130 publications. This is his 3rd presentation at the HeartNet of the Virginias Annual Cardiac Symposium.

Comprehensive Evaluation of the Heart Failure Patient
Dr. Stephen Phillips is the Medical Director of the Carilion Heart Failure Clinic and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine,
Nuclear Cardiology, and Cardiology. He received a BS from Wake Forest University and a Medical Degree from Virginia
Commonwealth University. Dr. Phillips previously presented at the Cardiac Symposium in 2009 on “Good, Better, Best:
The Evolving Treatment of Heart Failure” and in 2012 on Cardiomyopathy.

Past to Present: A Historical Review of the Advances in the Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratory
Dr. Timothy Ball is Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital,
Associate Program Director of the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program, Director of Carilion Clinic Cardiology
Vascular Medicine Services, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Dr. Ball
received his undergraduate degree from Clemson University and his Medical and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees from the
Medical University of South Carolina. He is currently Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Nuclear
Cardiology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Interventional Cardiology, and Endovascular Interventions.

The Challenging Hypertensive Patient
Dr. Matthew Schumaecker is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, and Adult
Echocardiography. He is currently a Cardiologist with Carilion Clinic Cardiology and Assistant Professor of Internal
Medicine for Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Dr. Schumaecker received his undergraduate degree from
Northwestern University, a Masters of Business Administration from Lehigh University, and his Medical Degree from
McGill University Faculty of Medicine.

Critical Care in the Cardiac Patient
Dr. Mark Joseph is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon with Carilion Clinic Cardiothoracic Surgery. He received his undergraduate
degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and his Medical Degree from the University of Oklahoma Health
Sciences Center. Dr. Joseph completed his fellowships in Trauma/Critical Care and in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is currently Board Certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
Dr. Joseph has authored numerous journal articles and presented at various conferences, including at the Annual Meeting
of American Association of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Apostolos “Paul” Dallas is Assistant Professor of Medicine for the Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine, and
Director of Continuing Medical Education and Director of Residency Recruitment/Selection for Carilion Clinic. Dr. Dallas
received a BA from the University of Virginia and a Medical Degree from Medical College of Virginia. He is Board Certified
in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Dallas has won numerous awards, including Bradley Free Clinic Volunteer of the Year and several Extra Mile Awards.
His presentations include three consecutive years at the American College of Physicians National Meeting. This is his 2nd
presentation at the HeartNet of the Virginias Annual Cardiac Symposium.
