100th Anniversary
The year 2016 marks the centennial year for Beebe
Healthcare, and we invite you to join us to celebrate!
Beebe team members and community volunteers have
commenced the planning of many exciting county-wide
historical projects, special events, and educational
initiatives to honor Beebe’s 100th year.
BEEBE HOSPITAL 1916
The original hospital on Savannah Road contained two
patient rooms with three beds and one operating room.
The history of the hospital’s philanthropy dates back to
1921 when Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Shaw made the first
major gift used to build and equip a 35-bed, state-of-theart medical facility. Today, that building is known as the
Shaw Building. For 100 years, Beebe has offered its services
to everyone without regard to race, religion, or ability
to pay.

The Medical Center, located in Lewes, is licensed for 210
beds, and the healthcare system overall has grown to
support the community with outpatient services and
walk-in care in seven locations throughout Sussex County.
Beebe’s award-winning and nationally recognized services
include Orthopaedics, Cardiac and Vascular Care, Tunnell
Cancer Center, Home Care Services, and Women’s Health.
Beebe Healthcare’s not-for-profit mission is to encourage
healthy living, prevent illness, and restore optimal health
with the people residing, working, or visiting the
communities we serve.

Whether you are a longtime resident of Sussex
County, or even if you have moved here more
recently, you have been able to see the growth
of Beebe Healthcare. We have grown from
a small community hospital to a progressive
healthcare system that is focused on not only
bringing clinically sophisticated programs to our area, but also
on helping those in our community lead and maintain healthy
lifestyles. As Beebe Healthcare celebrates its 100th Anniversary
this year, it is a time for us to reflect not only on our past and
the great strides we have made since James and Richard Beebe
started a two-room, three-bed hospital, but also on the exciting
future that lies ahead of us. While we have grown significantly
over the years and expanded our reach with new facilities and
locations, we have not lost the importance of making sure
our patients receive individualized care and treatment, and
are made to feel like they are members of our family. Most
importantly, we continue to work with our Medical Staff to keep
the wonderful doctors that are already here, as well as recruit
new doctors to our area. Physicians lead our clinical programs,
our new initiatives, and our efforts to continually strive for
improved outcomes and reduced costs. We are extremely
proud of our doctors and bring you this directory so that you
have access to all of our doctors, in all of the specialties and
subspecialties that they represent.
Beebe Healthcare has a rich tradition of physician involvement
and leadership, starting with James and Richard Beebe. The
year 2016 allows us to celebrate what the Beebe brothers did
for healthcare in our community 100 years ago, as well as the
critical contributions of all of our doctors who have helped
make Beebe Healthcare what it is today—a medically advanced
and sophisticated organization that remains focused on caring
for our entire community. We hope this latest version of the
Medical Staff Directory is helpful to you in your search for a
physician. Despite the national shortage of doctors, our Medical
Staff continues to grow because of the great clinical programs
here at Beebe Healthcare, the wonderful colleagues our doctors
are able to work with and interact with professionally, and
for the same reason many of our new residents move here:

SPECIALTIES MEAN?
Hospitalist A hospital-based general physician who assumes the
care of hospitalized patients in place of their primary care physician
while they are in the hospital.
Medical specialties can be complex and confusing.
Below you will find a list of the specialties Beebe offers
and a basic guide to what each means.
Hyperbaric Medicine Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been
proven to increase oxygen concentration in the body, which helps fight
bacteria, improve healing rates, and avoid loss of limbs in patients
with diabetes, vascular disorders, or who have sustained serious
trauma.
Anesthesiology The study and practice of administering
sedation and/or anesthesia to temporarily block pain.
Bariatric Surgery The branch of medicine that deals with the
treatment of obesity.
Cardiac Surgery The surgical treatments of diseases affecting
the heart and circulatory vessels.
Cardiology The study of the heart and its function.
Chiropractic Medicine A form of alternative medicine
that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical
disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under
the belief that these disorders impact general health via the nervous
system.
Colon and Rectal Surgery Surgery pertaining to the colon
and rectum.
Critical Care Medicine The care of critically ill patients.
Patients receive continuous and closely monitored care.
Dentistry, Pediatric The dental specialty that deals with the
care of children’s teeth, specifically prevention, use of fluoride, and
practice of oral hygiene.
Dermatology The practice of medicine concerned with the
physiology and pathology of the skin.
Diabetes Management & Medical Nutrition
Therapy The education of those who have diabetes or pre-diabetes.
Diagnostic Imaging The use of imaging in the diagnosis and
treatment of diseases.
Emergency Medicine The treatment of emergency illnesses
and traumatic injuries.
Endocrinology The study of hormones and other effects of the
endocrine system on the body.
ENT/Otolaryngology Surgical and medical treatment of
diseases of the ears, nose, throat, and neck.
Family Medicine–Primary Care The practice of medicine
in which a physician cares for all members of the family for general
healthcare.
Gastroenterology The diagnosis and treatment of diseases
of the digestive organs including the stomach, bowels, liver, and
gallbladder.
General Surgery A broad spectrum of surgical conditions
affecting any area of the body and the comprehensive management
of the trauma victim and the critically ill surgical patient.
Hematology The science concerned with blood and the
blood-forming tissues.

Infectious Disease The treatment of infectious diseases.
Internal Medicine–Primary Care The diagnosis and
medical treatment of diseases and disorders of internal structures of
the body.
Interventional Cardiology Deals specifically with the
catheter-based treatment of structural heart diseases and diseases
of the arteries that provide blood supply to the heart.
Interventional Radiology A medical subspecialty of
radiology that uses minimally invasive image-guided procedures
to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system.
Medical Oncology The study of tumors and cancers.
Neonatology A subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the
medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature
newborn infant.
Nephrology Science of the structure and function of the kidneys.
Neurology The study of the nervous system and its functions.
Nuclear Medicine The use of nuclear properties in the
diagnosis, treatment, and research of diseases.
Nurse Practitioner A nurse with advanced training who is
qualified to address medical conditions and prescribe treatments
without the direct supervision of a doctor.
Obstetrics/Gynecology Care for pregnancy, labor, and
delivery, as well as prenatal and postnatal care. Gynecology involves
diseases and treatment of the female genital tract.
Occupational Medicine The branch of medicine dealing
with the prevention and treatment of job-related injuries and illnesses.
Ophthalmology The branch of medicine dealing with the eyes.
Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery Surgery of the jaw, mouth,
and face.
Orthopaedics The branch of medical science that deals with the
prevention or correction of disorders associated with the skeletal and/
or muscular systems.
Pain Management The application of surgical and medical
treatments to control or eliminate acute or chronic pain resulting from
a physical injury or other medical condition.
Pathology The study of the changes in tissues and organs that
cause or are caused by disease.
Pediatrics The branch of medicine that deals with the
development, care, and diseases of children.

Pediatric Neurology or Child Neurology refers to a
specialized branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and
management of neurological conditions in neonates (newborns),
infants, children, and adolescents.
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation The diagnosis
and treatment of disease and disability by physical means to restore
functional ability.
Physician Assistant A member of the Medical Staff who
conducts physical exams, diagnoses and treats illnesses, orders
and interprets tests, prescribes medications, counsels on preventive
healthcare, and may assist in surgery.
Plastic Surgery Surgery concerned with the restoration,
reconstruction, correction, or improvement in the shape and
appearance of body structures.

Rheumatology The division of medicine concerned with acute

stiffness of muscles, and pain in joints and associated structures.
Sleep Medicine The study of unusual or disruptive sleep
patterns that affect the physical well-being of the body.
Surgical Oncology Surgery that relates to tumors and cancers.
Thoracic/Vascular Surgery Surgery pertaining to the chest
or to blood vessels outside of the heart and blood supply.
Trauma Surgery A surgical specialty that utilizes both operative
and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries.
Urology The medical/surgical specialty concerned with the study,
diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the genitourinary tract.
Wound Healing The study and practice of healing wounds.

integrated organization formed to ensure better health,
better healthcare, and lower costs for the communities
that it serves on the Delmarva Peninsula. Delmarva Health
Network is focused on delivering a better patient care
experience, while focusing on higher quality and better
clinical outcomes through various programs, including
coordinating the transitions patients make from provider

Ornish Reversal Program
Beebe Healthcare’s Ornish Reversal Program is based on
more than 35 years of peer-reviewed, published research
done by Dr. Dean Ornish, which shows the program can
reverse the progression of heart disease. It is simple, yet
requires personal commitment and action: Adopt a healthy
lifestyle based on the four key elements—a low-fat, whole
foods, plant-based diet; at least 30 minutes of exercise each
day; a practice of stress management techniques; and
active engagement in supportive relationships. The
program is based at the Beebe Health Campus at Rehoboth

Mended Hearts Support Group
Third Tuesday of the month at 2 p.m.
A heart health support group for those who have heart
disease, for those who have had heart-related medical procedures and for those who have had open-heart
surgery. Meetings, which are open to members as well as
non-members, include discussion and presentations on
heart health–related topics for heart patients as well as
their families and their caregivers. For more information,

PAIN LINX Education and Support Group
Focused on awareness, education, sharing, and support
for people with chronic pain. The group meets monthly. For

Parkinson’s Disease Support Group
A Parkinson’s disease (PD) support group helps those with
PD, their caregivers, and anyone else who may be afflicted
with body movement disorders. The group meets monthly.

Stroke Support Group
Fourth Thursday of the month at 5 p.m.
A stroke support group meets at Tunnell Cancer Center,
18947 John J. Williams Highway in Rehoboth Beach. The
group provides support to stroke survivors, care partners,
spouses, and friends. It provides education and resources
to maximize participation in home and community. The
instructor is Holly Sullivan, Speech/Language Pathologist at
