*What is popularly called “stomach flu” with symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea is
technically another malady called gastroenteritis.
 Viruses, not bacteria cause colds and flu, so antibiotics will not help UNLESS you develop
complications such as “strep throat:” or pneumonia.
PREVENTATIVE TIPS:
1. Try to avoid “coughers and sneezers.” The viruses are spread by respiratory
secretions.
2. WASH your hands frequently using soap, especially before eating, drinking,
applying lip balm, cosmetics, handling contacts lenses, or after coughing or
sneezing.
3. Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
4. Eat regular, well balanced meals, and drink at least 8 glasses of water or juice
each day.
5. Use a paper tissue only once then dispose of it immediately in the wastebasket.
SYMPTOMATIC TREATMENT: Visit the Self-Care Center in the Health Center
 REST: it’s difficult but vital to a speedy, uncomplicated recovery.
 Drink extra fluids
 Read over the counter medications carefully. Treat only the symptoms you have.
WHEN TO SEEK HELP:
1. Fever greater than 101
2. Painful swelling of neck glands
3. Persistent cough, difficulty breathing
4. Ear pain and /or very sore throat
5. Symptoms are severe, worsening, or have persisted more than one week.
