Care Pathway for the effective management and treatment of
uncomplicated genital Chlamydia infection through ICE
Positive Chlamydia result via ICE
Symptomatic patient treat in
line with BASHH guidance/ refer
to GUM for further advice and
full STI screening
Patient Treatment
Asymptomatic patient treat in line with BASHH guidance:
First line: Azithromycin 1g given as stat dose
Second line: Doxycycline 100mgs BD X7 days.
In pregnancy: Azithromycin 1g given as stat dose (can be used in pregnancy
and breast feeding (BASHH) or Erythromycin 500mg 12 hourly for 2 weeks or
erythromycin 500mg qds for 7 days (if breast feeding)
Advise no sexual contact even with condom for 7 days after treatment and/or
for an additional 7 days after their partner has been treated.
Please advise your patient to contact your service should they vomit within 2
hours after treatment as retreatment is advised
Recommend importance of full STI screen and condom use
Partner Notification
 Give patient the Chlamydia Fact Sheet and advise them
that they can give this to any sexual contact (s) in the past
6 months
 Complete the PN referral form with the patient and fax to
CSO
 Advise patient that a health advisor will contact within the
next 7 days
If the patient attends with their current partner
(is the partner registered at the practice?)
YES





Provide treatment to partner unless
contraindicated
Submit Chlamydia screen via ICE
and mark as sexual contact of
Chlamydia
Advise they will be contacted by
screening office to initiate PN
Recommend of importance of full
STI screen and condom use
Give partner Chlamydia fact sheet
NO



Offer patient postal kit to give to
current partner
Advise of importance of current partner
being treated to avoid re-infection
Give patient Chlamydia fact sheet to
give to partner
Health advisors from Chlamydia screening will contact the patient within 7 days and:
 Check compliance with medication
 Ask about any partner notification outcomes
 Request the contact details of any sexual partner (s) in the past 6 months
 Contact sexual partners to organise testing and treatment, as necessary
