Emery H. Bresnick is an expert on the development and function of blood cells in normal
and malignant contexts, mechanisms of cell regulation, including epigenetics, and
pharmacology. Dr. Bresnick joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin School
of Medicine and Public Health in 1994 after having engaged in postdoctoral training at
the National Institutes of Health with Gary Felsenfeld and Gordon Hager. Dr. Bresnick is
currently Professor of Cell and Regenerative Biology, Affiliate Professor of Medicine
(Hematology/Oncology), and Director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Blood
Research Program. Dr. Bresnick has received multiple awards including the Shaw
Scholar, Leukemia and Lymphoma and Lymphoma Society Scholar, and Kellet MidCareer Awards. Dr. Bresnick serves, or has served, as Chair of the Red Cell Scientific
Committee of the American Society of Hematology, Member of the Scientific Affairs
Committee of the American Society of Hematology, Chair of the National Institutes
of Health Erythrocyte and Leukocyte Biology Study Section, and editorial boards of
Blood, J. Biol. Chem., Mol. Cell Biol., and Nucl. Acids Res. At the University
of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Bresnick leads a multidisciplinary research program focusing
on normal and malignant hematopoiesis, red cell biology, and epigenetics, and organizes
research groups in molecular and cellular hematology and vascular biology. Dr. Bresnick
developed a course on Fundamentals of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology that is
taught yearly to a diverse cohort of graduate and undergraduate students and also teaches
graduate students in Cellular Signaling Mechanisms. Dr. Bresnick is committed to
mentoring the next-generation of scientists - from students, to postdoctoral trainees, and
junior faculty. In this vein, Dr. Bresnick was recently nominated by a cohort of junior
faculty for the Slesinger Award for Excellence in Mentoring, created by the Women
Faculty Mentoring Program, to recognize his dedication to mentoring pre-tenure
Assistant Professors in diverse departments at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
